TrueFoundry's open source AI tool TrueForge offers up to 75% savings over Claude

The company's new AI tool provides developers with a low-cost, flexible solution.

1What is TrueForge?

TrueForge is an open-source AI tool developed by TrueFoundry. Released under the MIT License, it offers developers a flexible solution to use with their own AI models. Designed specifically for managing multi-step tasks in enterprise environments, TrueForge can be utilized in areas like CRM, issue tracking systems, and document management.

2Cost advantage

TrueForge provides cost savings between 30% and 75% compared to Claude Managed Agents. According to TrueFoundry's tests, when completing 11 out of 14 tasks using the GLM-5.2 model, TrueForge cost only $2.90 compared to Claude Opus 4.8's $11.80. Even when using the same model, TrueForge remains about 30% cheaper than Claude.

3Why open source?

TrueFoundry COO Anuraag Gutgutia explains this decision was driven by customer demand. "Our customers wanted a solution where they could actually launch managed agents," Gutgutia stated. TrueForge meets this need by offering a vendor-neutral, low-cost alternative. However, the company emphasizes it's not meant to replace existing solutions.

4Technical features

TrueForge allows developers to start working locally with a single command using SQLite. The process can transition to shared deployment using Docker Compose or Helm with Postgres and Redis. The company warns that local configuration should only be used on developer machines, not as internet-facing production services.

5Context management

TrueForge's architecture is built around context engineering, optimizing the amount of information sent to the model at each step. Features include delaying MCP tool schema loading until needed, moving large tool results into files, and automatically compacting long conversations. The default compaction threshold is set at 50,000 tokens.

6Sandbox approach

TrueForge handles sandbox differently from other runtimes. While the core agent loop remains on the TrueForge server, sandbox is provisioned only when code execution or file handling is required. The company claims this approach reduces unnecessary computations and enables servers to run more agents concurrently.

7Competitive comparison

TrueForge is positioned as a general-purpose production agent. While DeepSeek Harness is an open-source developer preview, OpenAI Codex CLI focuses on software engineering workflows. LangChain Deep Agents are built on LangGraph, and Claude Managed Agents offer a fully managed solution by Anthropic. TrueForge provides advantages in licensing and pricing.

8Licensing and pricing

TrueForge is free under the MIT License, with separate costs for models, sandbox, and infrastructure. TrueFoundry also offers an optional commercial governance layer through its platform. In contrast, Claude Managed Agents charge $0.08 per running session-hour plus Claude token consumption. OpenAI Codex CLI costs approximately $100-$200 per developer monthly.

9Model flexibility

TrueForge adopts a vendor-neutral approach with bring-your-own-model (BYOM) support. DeepSeek Harness offers multi-provider support, while OpenAI Codex CLI supports configurable inference endpoints. LangChain Deep Agents provide broad multi-provider compatibility. Claude Managed Agents remain limited to Anthropic's own models.

10Enterprise strategy

TrueFoundry aims to make its AI Gateway the common layer beneath whichever agents and tools enterprises choose. COO Gutgutia states, "Some companies will use our harness as the way to launch managed agents." Others may continue using Claude, other open-source tools, or internal systems, but all traffic is planned to flow through TrueFoundry's gateway.
