Unofficial Super Mario Galaxy PC Port Released Without Nintendo Approval
Developer keepvaibin releases a native PC port of the Wii classic using AI-assisted coding.
1Native PC Port Launch
An unofficial native PC port of Super Mario Galaxy is now available for download. Developed by keepvaibin, the project allows users to play the title on Windows 10 and newer operating systems. It functions without requiring an exceptionally powerful computer, making the classic Wii platformer accessible to a broader PC gaming audience.
2Technical Specifications and Features
The port supports diverse aspect ratios ranging from 4:3 to 32:9. It includes modern graphical enhancements such as anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and per-pixel lighting. Furthermore, the implementation of AMD FidelityFX FSR 1 upscaling helps maintain visual quality, while the game remains fully playable on standard hardware configurations with 8GB of RAM.
3Hardware Performance Benchmarks
Testing on an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor with integrated graphics and 16GB of RAM yielded stable performance. The game achieved 60 frames per second at 1440p resolution during these trials. This demonstrates that the port is well-optimized for modern mobile-grade hardware, despite being a work in progress by the developer.
4Input and Controller Support
Players have significant flexibility regarding input methods for this unofficial release. The port provides native support for mouse and keyboard configurations. Additionally, it is compatible with various gamepads, including Xbox controllers, the Switch Pro controller, and the Switch 2 Pro controller, ensuring a familiar experience for long-time fans of the franchise.
5AI-Assisted Development Process
The developer utilized Anthropic's Claude AI to assist in building the port. Despite this automated support, keepvaibin personally reviewed and tested all generated output to ensure functionality. Crucially, the project contains no original code or assets from Nintendo, though users must provide their own legal copy of the game to play.
6Current Performance Limitations
As a work in progress, the port currently faces specific technical hurdles. Certain areas, such as Gateway Galaxy, experience frame rate drops below 60 FPS on slower CPUs. Additionally, heavy background CPU loads can cause audio skipping in specific sections, and some lighting or bloom effects differ slightly from the original Wii version.
7Historical Context of Franchise
Super Mario Galaxy originally debuted on the Nintendo Wii in 2007 as the third 3D platformer in the series. It achieved massive commercial success, selling 12.8 million copies throughout its lifetime. This performance secured its position as the 9th best-selling game on the Wii platform and inspired a movie released earlier this year.
8Trend of Unofficial Ports
This release joins a growing list of unofficial PC ports for popular Nintendo titles. Other notable examples include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario Sunshine. These projects highlight a persistent community effort to bring classic console experiences to the PC gaming ecosystem.
