Laneige Transforms Skincare Customization into Architectural Experience
Seoul flagship store redefines retail with interactive, personalized skincare journeys across four floors.
1Beyond traditional retail
Laneige's Seoul flagship replaces conventional product displays with four floors of architectural experiences. Designed by PlayLab, the space features oversized installations like a spiraling red tube that visually connects each level. This approach shifts focus from passive browsing to active discovery, aligning with the brand's skincare science and customization ethos. The store's layout encourages movement upward through distinct experiential zones.
2Customization at scale
Three core interactive stations transform products into personalized services: a Lip Sleeping Mask bar with 45 possible combinations, a robot-produced cushion compact matched from 150 shades, and an AI-driven skin analysis creating custom Cream Skin formulas from 25 options. These stations represent Laneige's technical capabilities while making customization tangible through physical interaction points scaled for human engagement.
3Architectural storytelling
The red tube installation serves as both visual anchor and spatial organizer, connecting floors while contrasting with softer interior finishes. Materials like stone, metal, and lacquer create a consistent yet varied backdrop. PlayLab's design intentionally restrains permanent architecture to highlight the bespoke installations, mirroring Laneige's blend of scientific precision and approachable aesthetics in product design.
4Urban context response
In Seoul's crowded Myeongdong district, the facade's blue tile cladding creates visual distinction. External attachment points allow for seasonal decorations while maintaining interior visibility. This solution addresses the challenge of standing out in a dense retail environment without overwhelming the brand's clean identity. The design mediates between urban intensity and Laneige's characteristic softness.
5Experience hierarchy
The store organizes experiences vertically, with ground-level attractions drawing visitors upward. Each floor maintains distinct material and color identities within an overall cohesive framework. This spatial strategy prolongs engagement time while preventing sensory overload. The journey culminates with personalized products, ensuring architecture ultimately highlights rather than overshadows Laneige's skincare offerings.
6Design philosophy
PlayLab's approach reflects Laneige's dual identity as both scientific and accessible. The architects balanced bold installations with restrained backgrounds, using scale shifts to make small products tangible. This mirrors the brand's positioning between skincare innovation and user-friendly application. The store becomes a three-dimensional brand manifesto, communicating values through spatial experience rather than signage.
7Operational integration
The flagship seamlessly incorporates technology like AI skin analysis and robotic compact production into physical flows. These automated touchpoints enable personalization at retail scale while maintaining human-centric interactions. The design demonstrates how advanced tech can enhance rather than replace the tactile aspects of beauty retail, creating hybrid digital-physical experiences.
8Retail evolution
Laneige's flagship represents a shift from transaction-focused stores to immersive brand environments. By architecturalizing customization processes, it makes intangible product benefits physically experienceable. This approach raises expectations for beauty retail, suggesting future stores may need to offer similarly multidimensional engagements that justify physical presence in an e-commerce era.
