The Phantom Twist drone's 25 RPS spinning chassis makes it appear as a faint smudge against backgrounds. ## Unique engineering design Unlike conventional quadcopters, the single-motor Phantom Twist was selected from over 20,000 AI-optimized configurations. Its custom components include precisely balanced circuit boards and counterweights. ## The science behind optical illusion The drone's rapid rotation exceeds human visual processing speed, creating transparency. Similar to long camera exposure, opaque elements blur into the background through motion averaging. ## Rigorous testing process Researchers simulated over 500 models across 100 real-world backgrounds. Flight stability was analyzed against mid-air spinning scenarios to finalize the design. ## Detection advantage over standard drones Phantom Twist proves 10 times harder to spot than quadcopters. Though audible, its support wires remain invisible at distance despite partial visibility up close. ## Future applications and potential Fully transparent materials and quieter propulsion could achieve complete invisibility. Potential uses range from military reconnaissance to discreet civilian operations. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.yankodesign.com/2026/07/22/palm-sized-drone-edges-one-step-closer-to-disappearing-completely-in-flight-behind-enemy-lines/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=palm-sized-drone-edges-one-step-closer-to-disappearing-completely-in-flight-behind-enemy-lines — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
