Once-a-Week Exercise Reduces Belly Fat, Study Finds

Research shows brisk interval walking once a week effectively reduces belly fat.

1Impact of Weekly Exercise

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong discovered that brisk interval walking once a week reduces belly fat and improves cardiorespiratory fitness. These results are comparable to traditional exercise programs recommended three times a week. The study offers a practical solution for individuals with busy schedules.

2Obesity and Health Risks

Obesity is a chronic health issue, and fat accumulation around the abdomen increases the risk of heart disease, metabolic disorders, and premature death. Exercise plays a crucial role in managing obesity, but many struggle to maintain regular physical activity.

3Advantages of Interval Training

Interval training combines intense exercise periods with low-intensity recovery phases. This method promotes fat burning in a shorter time compared to continuous moderate-intensity exercise. However, the recommended three sessions per week can be challenging for many.

4Weekend Warrior Approach

Previous research suggested that exercise concentrated into one or two days a week can still offer health benefits. However, there was limited evidence on the effectiveness of interval training when done once weekly. This study aimed to fill that gap.

5Study Details

The University of Hong Kong conducted a randomized trial from September 2021 to September 2024 involving 315 adults. Participants were divided into three groups: exercising once a week, three times a week, and a control group. Exercise groups completed a total of 75 minutes of interval training weekly.

6Results and Findings

After 16 weeks, both exercise groups showed similar improvements. Total body fat, body fat percentage, and waist circumference decreased. Cardiorespiratory fitness also improved compared to the control group. These findings prove that exercising once a week is effective.

7A Practical Alternative

Professor Parco Siu Ming-fai stated that once-weekly interval training offers benefits similar to the traditional three-session program. This provides a practical alternative for individuals with busy schedules. Time constraints are a primary barrier to maintaining regular exercise.

8Future Implications

This study could pave the way for more flexible exercise programs in obesity management. Exercising once a week may be an effective method for achieving health goals, especially for those with time constraints. This approach could reach a broader audience.
