Scientists discover new underground eel species in India thanks to TikTok
Researchers identified a new colorless subterranean eel after spotting it in a TikTok video from the India-Nepal border region.
1Mysterious fish spotted on TikTok
In 2024, a team of scientists working in northern India came across a TikTok video showing an unusual fish emerging from a hole on the India-Nepal border. The absence of known cave-dwelling fish species in the region made this discovery particularly surprising. The fish's unique physical characteristics prompted researchers from India and China to investigate further, leading to this remarkable scientific discovery.
2Challenging specimen collection
Collecting specimens proved to be an arduous process. Scientists manually pumped thousands of gallons of water into the ground using local hand pumps. Zoologist Akshay Khandekar from the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation described the difficulties in identifying suitable wells and obtaining permission from owners. The first specimen was found after pumping approximately 530 gallons of water but died during the collection process.
3Characteristics of the new species
The newly discovered eel species has been named Gangaichthys indonepalicus. Measuring just 1.5 inches long, this fish is physically adapted to complete darkness with small eyes covered by skin, a colorless translucent body, and no visible ribs. Advanced micro-CT scanning and genetic analysis confirmed it represents a completely distinct genus within the Chaudhuriidae family of earthworm eels.
4First subterranean fish from Gangetic Basin
The name Gangaichthys translates to 'fish of the Ganga.' Researcher Ishan Agarwal emphasized the Ganges River's importance as a freshwater source, food supply, and livelihood for millions. This discovery marks the first recorded stygobitic (cave-dwelling) fish from the Indo-Gangetic plains. The species name 'indonepalicus' reflects its location on the India-Nepal border.
5Scientific significance of the discovery
The study published in ZooKeys highlights the importance of this new species to the scientific community. This finding demonstrates that India's biodiversity remains incompletely explored. Researchers note that the country's vast geography and diverse climates likely harbor many more undiscovered species waiting to be found.
6Social media's contribution to science
This discovery serves as a striking example of how social media platforms can contribute to scientific research. Platforms like TikTok offer new opportunities beyond traditional scientific discovery methods. Researchers believe such platforms could facilitate citizen science initiatives, engaging the public in scientific observation and discovery.
7Ecological importance of the region
The India-Nepal border region is known for its rich biodiversity. The Ganges River basin hosts numerous endemic species. This discovery suggests the area's underground ecosystems may be more complex than previously thought. Scientists anticipate that further research in the region may yield additional surprises about its subterranean life.
8New era in scientific discovery
This event significantly demonstrates social media's potential role in scientific discoveries. The combination of traditional research methods with social media could open new avenues for findings. In biodiversity-rich countries like India, citizen posts may provide valuable clues for researchers, potentially accelerating the pace of biological discovery.
