Rents are skyrocketing, while salaries lag behind. Urby offers a design and community-focused solution to this problem. ## Urby's Vision Founded in 2010 by David Barry, Urby provides smaller yet functional apartments in secondary areas near city centers. The focus is on shared spaces rather than individual units, fostering social interaction among residents. ## Design and Functionality Collaborating with Dutch architecture firm Concrete Amsterdam, Urby offers flexible and smart designs from studios to three-bedroom units. Kitchens are galley-style but equipped with high-end appliances. Bedrooms are arranged to ensure privacy for roommates. ## Importance of Shared Spaces Shared spaces are a cornerstone of Urby complexes. Amenities include co-working lounges, fitness centers, outdoor patios, and even dog parks. These areas aim to enhance residents' social lives and overall quality of life. ## The Fishtown Example Urby's latest project in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood reflects local industrial heritage with a mural and Dutch-inspired architecture. The building even features a speakeasy with skyline views on the rooftop. ## The Future of Urban Living Urby is shaping the future of urban living. Its design and community-focused approach offers a more affordable and social lifestyle for young professionals. This model could inspire other cities to follow suit. ## Sources covering this story - https://design-milk.com/fishtown-urby-concrete-amsterdam/ — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
