The new rules mandate sharing sender identity information even for small donations. ## The Cost of a $6 Donation Coinbase requested Hunt provide detailed sender information including full name, residential address, ID number and date of birth for a $6 anonymous donation. This makes anonymous donation models practically impossible. ## Travel Rule Requirement Australia's new regulations effective July 1 require Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) to share sender and recipient information for all transactions. The aim is to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. ## Self-Hosted Wallets Aren't the Solution Hunt was advised to continue accepting donations via self-hosted wallets. But he noted relocating operations to a crypto-friendly country doesn't make sense for small donations, with global KYC trends increasing. ## AUSTRAC's Role Australia's financial intelligence unit AUSTRAC increased oversight of crypto asset providers with new regulations. Experts note that while self-hosted wallets don't require Travel Rule information sharing, KYC requirements still apply. ## The Price of Anonymity This development shows increasing difficulty maintaining anonymity in crypto. While regulators act on security concerns, legitimate small-scale use cases are also negatively affected by these measures. ## Sources covering this story - https://news.bitcoin.com/an-impossible-requirement-why-have-i-been-pwneds-creator-is-dropping-crypto-donations/ — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
