Verstas Architects Designs Comforting Mortuary in Helsinki with Natural Materials
Malmi Mortuary offers a minimalist design adaptable to diverse cultural traditions.
1Project Purpose
Verstas Architects designed the Malmi Mortuary in response to Helsinki's ageing population. The project aims to alleviate pressure on hospitals and care homes. The mortuary is located next to Malmi Cemetery, Finland's largest cemetery.
2Design Philosophy
The mortuary features a minimalist aesthetic using natural materials like stone, wood, and brick. The design aims to create a neutral environment adaptable to various cultural traditions. This approach offers a solution suitable for Helsinki's multicultural structure.
3Farewell Rooms
The project includes four farewell rooms designed for different rituals and customizable features. South-facing ceiling lanterns allow natural light to create a warm atmosphere.
4Architectural Details
The mortuary consists of two main sections: farewell rooms and areas for funeral procedures. The farewell rooms are arranged around a reflecting pool and feature spruce panels for acoustic comfort.
5Material Selection
Materials were chosen for durability and ease of cleaning. The combination of stone and wood creates a timeless and dignified atmosphere. Functional areas feature white surfaces and metal furniture.
6Significance and Impact
The Malmi Mortuary offers a design suitable for Helsinki's multicultural structure, bringing different traditions together. This project is a significant example of how architecture can support people in their most difficult moments.
