Hyderabad Launches India's First Private Space Debris Removal Facility
Base 1 facility aims to advance satellite servicing and orbital debris mitigation technologies.
1New Hub for Space Sustainability
Hyderabad has officially launched Base 1, a specialized facility developed by Cosmoserve Space. This site represents India's first private infrastructure dedicated to satellite servicing and debris removal. It is recognized as the sixth facility of its kind globally, marking a significant milestone for the nation's growing private aerospace technology sector.
2Inauguration by Government Officials
The facility was inaugurated on Thursday by Telangana IT Minister D Sridhar Babu and Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh. Their presence underscores the strategic importance of this private initiative for India's national space ambitions, including support for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission and Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
3Four Core Technical Units
Base 1 integrates four essential technical units to support complex orbital operations. These include an Orbital Rendezvous and Capture Lab, a Space Robotics Innovation Lab, a satellite integration clean room, and a Mission Simulation and Control Centre. This infrastructure allows the company to design, build, and test satellite systems under one roof.
4Addressing Orbital Debris Challenges
Space debris currently poses a severe risk to operational satellites and future missions due to millions of orbiting fragments. Cosmoserve aims to mitigate these hazards by developing systems for satellite repairs, refueling, and the removal of inactive hardware. Maintaining usable orbits is critical for the long-term sustainability of global space exploration efforts.
5Innovative Two-Spacecraft Servicing Model
Cosmoserve is developing a unique system that utilizes two spacecraft to service multiple satellites simultaneously. This dual-craft approach is designed to significantly reduce the overall costs associated with orbital maintenance. By streamlining these complex operations, the company seeks to provide a more economically viable solution for managing aging or inactive satellite assets.
6Financial Growth and Funding
The launch of Base 1 follows a successful seed funding round where Cosmoserve raised USD 6 million. This investment brings the company's total funding to over USD 9 million. These financial resources are being directed toward scaling operations and advancing the technical capabilities required for their upcoming orbital demonstration missions in 2027.
7Future Testing and Milestones
The company plans to conduct rigorous testing of its robotic capture systems during upcoming microgravity flights. Following these tests, the team intends to repeat its Mission Embrace launch. The ultimate goal is to execute a full-scale space debris capture demonstration by 2027, proving the viability of their proprietary technology in orbit.
8Regional Aerospace Ecosystem Expansion
This facility strengthens Hyderabad's position as a central hub for India's aerospace innovation. Telangana officials have announced plans for an exclusive Space City within the upcoming Bharat Future City to further support this sector. This development is expected to foster a robust ecosystem for private space companies to scale their operations.
