Critical Vulnerabilities Discovered in Five Major AI Developer Tools

Embedded browser flaws expose developer environments to code execution and data theft risks.

1The Embrace Vulnerability Class

Forever Security identified a new class of flaws dubbed Embrace, affecting five popular AI development tools. These vulnerabilities stem from embedded browsers granted excessive capabilities beyond standard web security models. By enriching browser functionality to interact with host environments, these tools inadvertently bypassed traditional threat boundaries, enabling unauthorized access and control.

2Cursor Arbitrary Code Execution

Cursor allowed web pages to communicate directly with the agent’s composer, bypassing standard JavaScript isolation. Attackers could leverage prompt injection to execute hidden commands on the host machine. Researchers disclosed this to Cursor on September 10, and the vendor silently patched the critical vulnerability on October 1 without issuing public advisories.

3GitHub Copilot Address Spoofing

GitHub Copilot’s browser preview allowed pages to define their own address bar content, leading to potential phishing risks. The application failed to verify the actual tab destination, trusting the page's input instead. GitHub independently resolved this flaw in build 1.1.29 on October 13, following the initial discovery on September 26.

4File Access in Claude Desktop

Claude Desktop restricted local HTML files from accessing project folders, but these safeguards failed against web workers. JavaScript running in background threads could bypass these restrictions to read arbitrary files on the host system. Anthropic initially rejected the report as invalid before accepting a similar submission from Noma Security later.

5Unpatched Flaws in Codex

OpenAI’s Codex remains vulnerable to arbitrary file reading, as it lacked the basic restrictions found in other tools. Researchers disclosed the issue to OpenAI on July 27, but the company provided no response. The flaw currently remains unpatched, leaving developers using the tool exposed to potential data theft and unauthorized access.

6VS Code Security Boundaries

Microsoft’s VS Code also suffers from a file-read vulnerability via web workers, similar to the Claude Desktop issue. Microsoft labeled the report as an invalid workspace trust issue after the September 10 disclosure. Consequently, the vulnerability remains unpatched, and the company has not provided further comments regarding the security status.

7Common Security Failure Mechanism

All five tools share a fundamental flaw: they treat embedded browsers as trusted components with elevated host access. By allowing these browsers to act as agents or control address bars, the vendors undermined standard security models. This architectural choice created a bridge between untrusted web content and sensitive local developer environments.

8Industry Security Implications

The discovery highlights the urgent need for stricter security boundaries in AI-integrated development environments. As tools gain deeper access to host machines, the attack surface expands significantly. Developers must remain cautious of these embedded browser risks until vendors implement robust sandboxing and address the underlying architectural weaknesses identified by researchers.
