People & Culture Generalist Position at Nielsen Norman Group
This fully remote role combines HR and business operations in a growing UX research leader.
1About the Company
Nielsen Norman Group has been the leading UX research and consulting firm for over 25 years. Operating as a small, fully remote team, they serve global clients across industries. With a startup mentality, the company emphasizes high ownership and minimal hierarchy. The People & Culture function is currently in growth mode, and this position is central to that expansion.
2Role Scope
This hybrid role combines People generalist responsibilities with business operations functions. It covers the entire employee lifecycle (from onboarding to offboarding), payroll, benefits, and compliance tracking. The position is full-time with benefits from day one, reporting to the People & Culture Strategy and Operations Leader.
3Core Responsibilities
Onboarding processes: Equipment provisioning, system access, benefits enrollment, and welcome communications. Offboarding management including system access revocation, equipment returns, and COBRA administration. Maintaining accurate employee records aligned with data classification tiers. Managing semi-monthly payroll through ExtensisHR (their PEO and HRIS platform).
4Day-to-Day Operations
Managing the People Operations intake queue and closing items within established response times. Serving as first point of contact for policy/process questions and escalating precedent-setting issues. Supporting review cycle logistics and maintaining career band documentation. Assisting with recruiting coordination: scheduling, candidate communication, and requisition tracking.
5Culture & Business Ops
Supporting culture initiatives like team events, surveys, and milestone celebrations. Maintaining current, manager-friendly SOPs and process guides. Managing vendor contracts and software renewals, flagging renegotiation opportunities. Preparing state registration and tax account filings for Finance team submission.
6Ideal Candidate
3-5 years HR experience (benefits, leave, compliance, employee lifecycle). Operational maturity to independently manage recurring processes. Clear, jargon-free written communication skills. Self-directed in remote, asynchronous environments. Comfort building infrastructure where playbooks aren't fully established. PEO experience (ExtensisHR, Rippling) or HR certifications are pluses but not required.
7Compensation & Benefits
Comprehensive package includes: Medical/dental/vision insurance. HSA (Health Savings Account). Unlimited PTO. Performance-based bonus eligibility. Flexible work arrangements. After 1 year: 401(k) with employer contributions and ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) for eligible employees. PEO experience or SHRM-CP/PHR certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
8Application Process
Applications open until August 28, 2026. Requires resume submission and a 30-45 minute written exercise. Selected candidates interview with the P&C leader (approx. 1 hour) discussing experience and work approach. Background at 50-200 person companies building processes, proficiency with Notion/Slack/Google Workspace, or benefits renewal cycle experience are favorable differentiators.
