Apple Introduces New Restrictions for Social Media Apps
Usage time management for children on social media is coming.
1New Age Rating Questions
Apple has added new age rating questions to App Store Connect for apps that include social media features. These questions will help parents better manage their children's social media usage.
2Time Allowances
The Time Allowances feature, coming with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, will offer parents flexibility in managing their children's time spent on categories like Entertainment, Games, and Social Media.
3Definition of Social Media Capabilities
Apple defines social media capability as the ability to redistribute, expand, or interact with user-generated content through a social feed or similar discovery method.
4Restriction for Under 13
If apps offer social media capabilities, they will automatically receive a '13+' age rating and be added to the Social Media Time Allowances category unless these features are disabled for users under 13.
5New Label in App Store
Apps with social media capabilities will display a new 'Social Media' content descriptor on their App Store product pages. This will help parents better identify such apps.
6Mandatory for Developers
Starting September 2026, developers will be required to answer these questions when submitting new apps or updates. This also applies to notarization submissions for alternative distribution.
