Stockal Fintech Faces Allegations of Unauthorized US Stock Liquidations
Nearly 30 Indian investors report ₹100 crore losses after accounts were compromised.
1Massive Unauthorized Portfolio Liquidations
Nearly 30 Indian retail investors allege losses exceeding ₹100 crore after their US stock portfolios were liquidated without consent on October 15. The affected accounts, managed via the Bengaluru-based fintech platform Stockal Securities, saw blue-chip holdings like Apple and Tesla sold off rapidly to purchase thinly traded Chinese equity shares.
2Execution of Suspicious Trades
One investor reported the unauthorized sale of $335,768 worth of shares, followed by an immediate purchase of 300,000 Zhibao Technology Inc. shares. Another victim claimed $3.1 million in securities were liquidated within two minutes. These transactions occurred without standard trade confirmations, alerts, or verification protocols typically required for such large-scale movements.
3Platform Security and Credentials
Stockal Securities suggests the incident likely stemmed from compromised customer email credentials via phishing or social engineering rather than a direct platform breach. The company maintains that its internal systems remain secure. However, the exact mechanism allowing unauthorized parties to execute these trades across multiple accounts remains currently under investigation.
4Clearing Broker Denies Liability
DriveWealth LLC, the US-based clearing broker, explicitly denied responsibility for the security lapses in a letter dated October 30. They asserted that unauthorized access occurred within the Stockal interface. DriveWealth further alleged that Stockal’s instructions to freeze accounts prevented them from taking necessary corrective actions to mitigate investor market exposure.
5Conflicting Institutional Responses
DriveWealth criticized Stockal for a perceived lack of urgency in addressing the crisis and communicating with affected clients. The broker claimed that Stockal failed to confirm efforts to reach out to impacted investors. Meanwhile, Stockal continues to investigate the circumstances, leaving victims without reimbursement or restoration of their original investment portfolios.
6Regulatory Complaints Filed
Affected investors have escalated the matter by filing formal complaints with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). They are seeking immediate regulatory intervention to recover losses. As of the latest reports, neither Sebi nor DriveWealth had provided responses to media inquiries.
7Operational Risks in Fintech
This incident highlights the systemic risks associated with cross-border investment platforms that rely on third-party clearing brokers and digital interfaces. The rapid liquidation of portfolios within minutes demonstrates a vulnerability in automated trading systems. Investors are now questioning the adequacy of security protocols and the speed of incident response mechanisms.
8Ongoing Investigation and Impact
The situation remains unresolved as the identity of the perpetrators and the motive behind the concentrated purchase of Zhibao Technology shares remain unknown. With significant capital at stake, the case serves as a critical test for regulatory oversight of fintech platforms facilitating international stock trading for retail users in the Indian market.
