SK Hynix Flash Crash Repeats on Nextrade

Reliability of price feed systems in crypto derivatives markets under scrutiny.

1Repeat of the Flash Crash

SK Hynix shares plummeted 30% on Nextrade on Thursday, marking the second such incident after a similar glitch on July 28. The previous crash triggered $60 million in liquidations on Hyperliquid. This time, shares traded 30% below the closing price on the Korea Exchange. Although prices quickly recovered, the event exposed vulnerabilities in the link between traditional stock markets and crypto derivatives.

2Small Trade, Big Impact

Only 11 shares traded at 1,168,000 won ($840) on Nextrade. This small volume caused a sharp price drop. Price feed systems that incorporate such minor trades can create significant volatility in crypto derivatives markets. Platforms like Hyperliquid rely on price data from alternative exchanges like Nextrade, demonstrating how low liquidity can lead to major disruptions.

3Aftermath of the July Incident

On July 28, a similar event caused SK Hynix shares to hit the daily limit down. This drop led to a 20% crash in a Hyperliquid perpetual futures contract tracking the stock. The contract diverged sharply from prices on other venues, triggering liquidations in over 900 leveraged accounts. On-chain data showed $60 million in positions wiped out and $17.4 million in realized losses.

4Hyperliquid's Response

Hyperliquid agreed to compensate affected traders after the July incident and announced a review of how external equity prices are integrated into its pricing system. The platform acknowledged the risks of using price data from low-liquidity exchanges. Such events raise concerns about the reliability of price feed mechanisms in crypto derivatives markets.

5Nextrade's Structure

Nextrade launched last year as a low-cost alternative to the Korea Exchange with extended trading hours. The platform uses a single price source, a common practice among alternative exchanges. However, critics argue this makes markets vulnerable to sharp moves caused by thin trading activity. Nextrade operates in an environment where small trades can distort prices.

6Risks in Crypto Derivatives

SK Hynix shares have become a key indicator of AI chip demand and a popular asset for leveraged crypto trading. Perpetual contracts tied to such stocks are only as reliable as the weakest link in their price feed system. Repeated crashes on Nextrade may push exchanges to reconsider their price sourcing methods for equity-linked derivatives.

7Oracle System Reliability

Crypto perpetual contracts rely on price feed systems called oracles to bring external market data onto blockchain platforms. Hyperliquid incorporates prices from Nextrade, even when based on limited trading volume. This raises questions about the system's reliability. Diversifying oracle systems could mitigate such risks.

8Role of Market Makers

The lack of liquidity providers on alternative exchanges like Nextrade complicates price stability. Traditional exchanges use market makers to prevent small trades from causing large price swings. Nextrade's structure lacks such stabilizing mechanisms, highlighting challenges in integrating crypto derivatives with traditional financial infrastructure.
