Hastings Technology Metals Finalizes $15M Thai Rare Earths Plant Acquisition

Strategic investment in Kabin Buri facility accelerates transition to downstream rare earths production.

1Strategic Acquisition Completion

Hastings Technology Metals has finalized a 49 percent stake in the Kabin Buri hydrometallurgical plant located in Thailand. The deal, valued at 15 million US dollars, marks a pivotal shift for the company as it moves from traditional mining toward downstream rare earth production. This acquisition provides an immediate operational footprint in the sector.

2Financial Structure and Milestones

The transaction includes an initial 0.5 million dollar cash deposit and 8 million dollars in equity through 23 million Hastings shares. A 1 million dollar commissioning payment is required, while the final 5.5 million dollars remains deferred. This remaining balance is strictly contingent upon meeting specific contractual production and sales performance milestones.

3Expanded Processing Capacity

Management is currently upgrading the facility to achieve a nameplate output capacity of 12,000 tonnes per annum of mixed rare earth chloride. This target represents a significant doubling of the plant's original throughput capacity. Testing and commissioning phases are currently on track to commence within the first quarter of the upcoming year.

4Securing Feedstock Supply

To mitigate start-up risks, Hastings secured a binding supply agreement with Enuo Holdings for 10,000 tonnes of monazite concentrate annually. This feedstock will be sourced from Africa, ensuring independent operations while the company’s flagship Yangibana project in Western Australia continues development. This supply chain security is essential for maintaining consistent plant output levels.

5Technical Processing Expertise

The Kabin Buri facility specializes in chemically cracking and leaching monazite concentrate to produce mixed rare earth chloride. This process is recognized as one of the most technically demanding steps in the industry. With few global operators capable of executing this successfully, the facility creates a formidable barrier to entry for competitors.

6Projected Financial Performance

At full capacity, the expanded plant is estimated to generate 110.4 million dollars in gross annual revenue. Hastings expects its share of profit before tax to reach 15.5 million dollars in the first full year of production. This figure is forecast to increase to 17.5 million dollars in subsequent years of operation.

7Regulatory and Ownership Outlook

Hastings is preparing an investment promotion application with Thailand’s Board of Investment. Success could allow the company to increase its stake beyond 49 percent and potentially secure a corporate income tax exemption for up to 13 years. These incentives would significantly enhance the long-term economic viability of the Thai processing hub.

8Accelerating Market Entry

By acquiring a near-term production asset, Hastings effectively bypasses the lengthy lead times typically associated with greenfield mining developments. While the Yangibana project remains the core long-term asset, the Thai plant serves as a critical stepping stone. This strategy positions the company to establish itself as a competitive global downstream player.
