Apple Introduces Touchscreen MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display

New M5-powered MacBook Pro models integrate touch functionality and advanced display technology for professionals.

1Historic Touchscreen Integration

Apple officially introduced touchscreen support to the MacBook Pro lineup on October 28, marking a significant departure from its long-standing design philosophy. CEO John Ternus confirmed the feature is integrated directly into the new PROLED XDR display. This development aims to complement existing keyboard and trackpad inputs rather than replacing them entirely.

2Advanced Display Specifications

The new PROLED XDR display utilizes tandem OLED technology to achieve a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. It features a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and supports ProMotion technology for 120 Hz adaptive refresh rates. Professionals can utilize P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces, with an optional nano-texture glass available to minimize glare during intensive creative tasks.

3M5 Chipset Performance

The lineup is powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, designed for demanding workloads like 8K video editing and 3D animation. The M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. These chips include neural accelerators specifically optimized to process large language models and complex AI tasks locally on-device.

4Thermal and Structural Design

The 14-inch and 16-inch models feature a redesigned thermal architecture to maintain performance efficiency. The 14-inch version weighs 1.36 kg, while the 16-inch model weighs 1.81 kg. A reinforced hinge mechanism provides the necessary stability for touch interactions, ensuring the screen remains steady while users swipe, pinch, or draw directly on the display panel.

5Professional Workflow Applications

Touch functionality is optimized for creative and productivity software, including Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, and Microsoft Office. Developers can now test touch-based interactions directly on their hardware. Musicians can play software instruments on-screen, while designers benefit from direct input capabilities that streamline complex workflows in applications like Canva, Notion, and Cinema 4D.

6Connectivity and Audio Upgrades

Connectivity is bolstered by three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, and an SDXC card slot. The devices support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for faster data transfer. Audio performance is enhanced through a six-speaker system delivering 50 per cent deeper bass, complemented by studio-quality microphones and a 12 MP Centre Stage camera for professional video conferencing.

7Pricing and Market Availability

Pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro models opened on October 28 via Apple’s online store. Retail availability begins on November 9 at authorized resellers. Pricing starts at Rs 3,49,900 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model, with education discounts available for eligible buyers, reducing the entry price for the base 14-inch configuration to Rs 3,31,900.

8Strategic Industry Implications

Apple’s entry into the touchscreen laptop market validates the technology as a standard for premium devices. While IDC data shows touchscreen notebooks accounted for 16 per cent of shipments in 2025, this move may pressure Windows manufacturers to elevate their hardware standards. The industry expects touchscreen laptops to reach one in five total notebook shipments by 2030.
