1Second Annual Design Showcase

Apple has launched the second iteration of its Designers of Tomorrow initiative in partnership with Design Miami. The exhibition, currently hosted at the Hôtel de Maisons in Paris, features four distinct creative projects. This program aims to spotlight emerging talent while demonstrating how professional creators utilize standard consumer technology for complex artistic production.

2Curated Selection Process

Participants for this year's showcase were selected by a specialized jury, which included Apple’s vice president of industrial design, Molly Anderson. The selection process focused on identifying artists capable of interpreting the theme of presence. The curator, Rodman Primack, noted that these works emphasize how objects fundamentally shape our physical environments and experiences.

3The Theme of Presence

The exhibition explores what captures public attention within the rapid pace of modern life. Designers Salem S. Charabi, Isabel Rower, Yoonjeong Lee, and the duo Parafernalia created original works intended to shift perspectives and engage the senses. These projects invite viewers to reflect on their surroundings through the lens of contemporary design.

4Architectural Workflow Integration

Egyptian-Danish architect Salem S. Charabi utilized the MacBook Pro as his primary tool for the exhibition. He relied on the device for intensive sketching and 3D modeling tasks. By integrating high-performance hardware into his architectural process, Charabi demonstrates how digital tools facilitate the transition from initial conceptual sketches to complex physical structures.

5Digital Sketching and Prototyping

Seoul-based designer Yoonjeong Lee leveraged the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to develop her contributions. She used these tools for rapid sketching and note-taking throughout her creative journey. This workflow highlights the portability and precision of tablet-based design tools in capturing spontaneous ideas during the early stages of the artistic development process.

6Remote Collaboration Dynamics

The Mexican design studio Parafernalia, consisting of Genki Matsumura and Sebastián Zorrilla, utilized the iPhone, iPad Pro, and Procreate to collaborate remotely. By connecting between Monterrey and Mexico City via FaceTime, they managed their project workflow across distances. This demonstrates the efficacy of Apple’s ecosystem in supporting distributed creative teams during production.

7Documentation and Experimentation

Brooklyn-based designer Isabel Rower employed the iPhone to document her creative process throughout the project. Additionally, she utilized Keynote to experiment with various image and text compositions. Her approach illustrates how standard presentation software can be repurposed as a functional tool for visual experimentation and artistic layout design within professional creative workflows.

8Strategic Brand Positioning

While some critics view such exhibitions as marketing efforts, the initiative provides insight into professional creative methodologies. By showcasing how diverse designers use familiar tools, Apple reinforces the versatility of its hardware. The project serves as a bridge between high-end industrial design and the practical utility of consumer-grade technology in modern art.
