Xi'an's New Library Complex Fosters Urban Connections Through Design
Cultural hub blends monumental scale with intimate spaces to encourage public engagement
1Architectural Vision
The 70,000-square-meter Chang'an Academy Xi'an Public Library combines cultural functions with urban connectivity. Designed by Hong Designworks and China Northwest Architectural Design Institute, the complex overlooks Xi'an's Ba River in the Chanba Ecological Area. Its sweeping white roof, inspired by book pages, crowns reading spaces, exhibition areas, and educational facilities. The architects aimed to balance monumental presence with human-scale accessibility through their 'de-memorialization' philosophy.
2Design Philosophy
Co-founder Ming Dang explains the shift from formal expression to functional engagement in public architecture. The team focused on creating spaces that invite everyday use rather than just symbolic representation. This approach reflects contemporary discussions about cultural architecture's role in urban life. The design intentionally avoids the 'large but empty' spatial logic common in monumental buildings, instead prioritizing genuine human connections through thoughtful spatial organization.
3Spatial Organization
The complex divides into three sections connected by a central plaza and a narrow cut through the building. This strategic segmentation helps humanize the large-scale structure. The central atrium draws visitors inward while bringing in natural light. Various levels contain different activity zones, from quiet reading nooks to amphitheater-style gathering spaces. Curved staircases and walkways create fluid circulation between these areas.
4Atrium Innovation
Departing from conventional atrium designs that prioritize circulation, this space encourages lingering and interaction. Measuring significantly large, it hosts diverse activities simultaneously - from individual study to community events. The design transforms what's typically a transitional void into an engaging social hub. This reimagining of atrium functionality represents a paradigm shift in public building design philosophy.
5Roof Design
The library's signature roof slopes downward at the center and rises at the corners above full-height glazed walls. This configuration references both open book pages and traditional Chinese upturned eaves. The dynamic form enhances interior openness while creating visual interest externally. Roof geometry was carefully calculated to optimize daylight penetration throughout the spacious interior.
6Material Palette
Interiors balance safety requirements with warmth through wood-grain metal panels that meet fire codes. Stone floors provide durability, while white triangular ceiling panels reflect light. This material combination creates a welcoming yet sophisticated atmosphere. Full-height glazing maximizes natural light, reducing artificial lighting needs and connecting visitors visually with the surrounding landscape.
7Contextual Design
The project responds to Xi'an's urban context through its riverside location and ecological considerations. It complements nearby Olympic Sports Centre facilities while establishing its own cultural identity. The design acknowledges China's architectural heritage through subtle nods to traditional elements, reinterpreted in contemporary forms. This approach creates dialogue between past and present architectural languages.
8Cultural Impact
The library represents a new model for cultural infrastructure that prioritizes human experience over pure monumentality. By successfully blending large-scale public function with intimate, usable spaces, it sets a benchmark for future projects. The design demonstrates how architecture can actively foster community engagement and urban connectivity, making it particularly relevant for rapidly developing Chinese cities.
