Android Skills: Why Limited and How to Use Them?
The philosophy behind official Android skills and usage tips for developers.
1Purpose of Official Android Skills
The Android team released official skills in April 2024. These skills target verifiable knowledge gaps in state-of-the-art (SOTA) models. Only 20 official skills have been released so far because there's no need to teach the model what it already knows. Skills focus on rapidly evolving areas where models aren't fully grounded yet, such as AGP 9, Navigation 3, advanced Camera APIs, and Perfetto SQL.
2Performance Impact of Skills
Each installed skill injects 100-200 tokens into the baseline context of every task. When a skill activates, this count can quickly jump into the thousands. Installing basic Kotlin or Compose skills is often counterproductive and costly. Developers should evaluate whether their LLM already knows these topics well enough.
3Skill Evaluation Process
Before release, each skill undergoes comprehensive evaluations proving it delivers clear value. These evals must pass when the skill is active and fail otherwise. For example, a skill adding horizontal pages to a wear app must pass tests verifying HorizontalPagerScaffold and AnimatedPage usage. Skills are tested in Android Studio with the latest Gemini Flash model.
4Using the Android Knowledge Base
Android app developers should use the Android Knowledge Base to access official documentation. The agent in Android Studio already includes this tool, but others need Android CLI installed. The docs command gives your agent access to official Android docs. Using a single tool is far more efficient than installing hundreds of skills.
5Community Contributions and Core Skills
Direct pull requests aren't accepted due to internal infrastructure dependencies. However, community feedback is actively monitored. While SOTA models usually don't need basic skills, core skills can help when using vague prompts, smaller models, refactoring legacy code, or deviating from standard architectures.
6Community-Built Skills
The Android community offers comprehensive skills for Compose and Kotlin. Developers like Chris Banes, Ivan Morgillo, and Jaewoong Eum have published specialized skills for testing, performance, and auditing. However, downloading from reputable sources is critical. Repositories with dozens of Android skills may be AI-generated, untested, or even malicious.
7Future of Skills and Use Cases
Skills are designed to fill specific knowledge gaps in models. For example, a specialized Compose animation skill can guide the model toward modern APIs when given vague prompts. Basic skills can fill knowledge gaps when using smaller, open-weight models. Custom skills help maintain alignment with non-standard architectures.
8Importance of Skills in Android Development
Android skills help developers optimize their time and token usage. Choosing and using the right skills improves model efficiency. The limited number of official skills prevents unnecessary installations, boosting performance. Reliable community-built skills also play a vital role in meeting specialized needs.
