Integrating AI Agents with Vintage Teletype Hardware
Connecting modern AI coding assistants to legacy hardware via serial protocols.
1Retro Hardware Meets AI
AWS developer advocate Darko Mesaroš successfully connected a vintage teletype to a modern AI coding assistant. By repurposing legacy hardware like a DECwriter, he created a terminal interface for AWS Kiro. This project highlights the intersection of 40-year-old computing equipment and contemporary agentic coding services through creative technical engineering.
2Bridging Modern Protocols
The project utilized the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) to facilitate communication between the AI agent and the terminal. Mesaroš employed a WiModem232 to emulate Hayes-compatible modem functionality, enabling serial connectivity. This setup allowed the modern CLI to transmit data to hardware originally designed for Commodore 64 systems and BBS networks.
3Custom Rust Middleware
A custom Rust application was developed to translate Kiro’s output into a format compatible with the teletype. Since the printer operates at a slow speed of 30 characters per second, the software acts as a necessary bridge. This middleware ensures that modern data streams are readable by the legacy printing hardware.
4Protocol Portability Potential
While the implementation specifically targets AWS Kiro, the underlying architecture remains highly portable. Because the system relies on the standard ACP protocol, it can theoretically integrate with other coding assistants like Claude Code or Codex. This demonstrates how standardized protocols allow for interoperability between vastly different technological generations and systems.
5Serial Connectivity Challenges
The integration faces significant technical hurdles, primarily regarding packet loss and data buffering. The serial device lacks native retry mechanisms, meaning dropped packets are permanently lost during transmission. Furthermore, the absence of buffering creates a bottleneck where the serial device itself limits the throughput of the incoming data fire hose.
6Hardware Maintenance Philosophy
Mesaroš emphasizes the importance of repairability in hardware, contrasting vintage machines with modern, disposable electronics. He maintains his collection of Commodore, Sinclair, and Data General systems using soldering skills. This approach stands in direct opposition to modern laptops, which he describes as difficult to repair and prone to total disposal.
7Educational Technical Value
Although the project serves no practical modern purpose, it provided significant educational value regarding serial connectivity debugging. By forcing the developer to work within the constraints of legacy hardware, the experiment deepened his understanding of the ACP protocol. It serves as a practical exercise in stretching modern AI capabilities through unconventional methods.
8Curiosity Driven Engineering
The project underscores the value of curiosity-driven development in the current AI landscape. By ignoring the lack of utility, the developer successfully explored the limits of modern agentic tools. This experiment proves that even seemingly pointless technical endeavors can yield deep insights into protocol architecture, serial communication, and hardware-software integration.
