Google Launches Credentio: Open-Source C++ Library for C2PA Content Credentials
High-performance local media validation library now available for developers.
1What is Credentio?
Credentio is an open-source C++ library developed by Google for handling C2PA (Content Provenance and Authenticity) compliant content credentials. Supporting versions 2.2 and 2.4, the library is already used in over 40 Google products to validate billions of assets. It enables verification of content origin across various formats including images, videos, audio files, and documents.
2Local Validation Advantage
Credentio allows media files to be validated entirely locally without needing to be sent to cloud servers. This eliminates privacy risks, latency issues, bandwidth limitations, and file size restrictions. Through its API, developers gain access to a powerful validation solution that can be integrated directly into their applications.
3Performance with Large Files
Validating very large digital assets (such as multi-gigabyte video files or high-resolution images) poses computational challenges for traditional libraries. Credentio was specifically engineered to solve these performance bottlenecks. It consumes significantly less memory than other solutions when validating large files.
4Memory Efficiency
Credentio maintains a small memory footprint when validating files of any size, from small images to multi-gigabyte videos. This makes it ideal for integration into resource-constrained client applications, server pipelines, or high-performance edge software. It simplifies C2PA compliance for developers without compromising speed or control.
5Trust Lists Support
Currently, Credentio focuses on precisely validating content credentials. Developers can pass custom or official C2PA trust lists through the API to evaluate credential authenticity against known authorities. This feature plays a critical role in maintaining content integrity across digital platforms.
6Use Cases
Credentio is specifically designed for developers building high-performance, enterprise-grade C2PA validator products. Whether developing desktop applications, mobile software, or backend media processing services, Credentio makes C2PA compliance straightforward. The library offers developers significant advantages in speed and control.
7Future Plans
As the C2PA specification evolves, Credentio will be updated in parallel. Google plans to develop the library according to community needs and expand its capabilities beyond validation. Future goals include adding full functionality to generate Content Credentials and seamlessly embed them directly into media files.
8Community Contributions
Credentio is now available as an open-source project. Google welcomes contributions from the developer community, including bug fixes, new features, and performance optimizations. Developers, security researchers, and media ecosystem partners are invited to collaborate and help shape the future of local C2PA validation.
