6 Emergency Features You Must Enable on Your iPhone

Configure these life-saving iPhone settings before an emergency occurs.

1Medical ID Settings

In the Health app, you can create a Medical ID containing critical information like blood type, allergies, and medications. Enabling 'Show When Locked' makes this info accessible from the lock screen. The 'Share During Emergency Call' option automatically sends your Medical ID to emergency services when you dial 112. This feature ensures first responders have vital health data even if you're unable to communicate.

2Adding Emergency Contacts

When setting up your Medical ID, designate at least one emergency contact from your Contacts list. These individuals will automatically receive notifications during Crash Detection or Emergency SOS incidents, including your location. Emergency contacts bypass Focus modes by default, ensuring you never miss critical alerts. You can specify relationships (spouse, parent) for better context.

3Emergency SOS Configuration

Customize how Emergency SOS activates in Settings - choose between holding the side button or pressing it five times. The satellite-enabled Emergency SOS works globally without cellular coverage, automatically sharing your location, battery status, and Medical ID. This feature is particularly valuable for travelers or those in remote areas where traditional emergency services might be unavailable.

4Crash Detection Feature

Available on iPhone 14 and later, Crash Detection automatically contacts emergency services after severe vehicle impacts. If unresponsive for 10 seconds, your iPhone initiates a call after a 30-second countdown while simultaneously alerting your emergency contacts with your location. This feature can be disabled in Settings > Emergency SOS but provides critical assistance when you're incapacitated.

5Emergency Alerts System

Your iPhone receives government-issued alerts for natural disasters (earthquakes, floods) and public safety threats (AMBER alerts) by default. Under Settings > Notifications, the 'Enhance Safety Alerts' option lets you customize which imminent threat notifications you receive. These real-time warnings can provide crucial seconds to seek safety during emergencies.

6Location Sharing for Emergencies

Ensure 'Emergency Calls & SOS' is enabled under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This allows automatic location sharing with first responders during emergency calls. While Emergency SOS via satellite is currently free, availability varies by country. The same technology also powers roadside assistance requests in the U.S., UK, and Australia.

7Emergency Bypass for Contacts

When using Focus modes that silence notifications, enable Emergency Bypass for critical contacts to ensure their calls/messages always produce sound. Edit a contact's card and toggle Emergency Bypass in Ringtone/Text Tone settings. This override ensures you never miss urgent communications from family members, healthcare providers, or other essential contacts during crises.

8Why These Settings Are Lifesaving

iPhone's emergency features create a comprehensive safety net that activates precisely when seconds matter most. For frequent travelers, individuals with medical conditions, or those in high-risk areas, pre-configuring these options can mean the difference between life and death. Apple's integrated emergency response system exemplifies how technology can proactively protect users during their most vulnerable moments.
