Escaped Tennessee Killer Apprehended Near Kansas City After Week-Long Manhunt
Convicted murderer Jacob Morley captured after stealing truck and leaving apology note.
1Escape from Tennessee Prison
Jacob Morley, a 28-year-old serving a life sentence for murder, escaped the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tennessee on October 25. He successfully bypassed a perimeter fence, triggering a massive manhunt that lasted over a week. Authorities are currently investigating the specific security lapses that allowed him to flee the facility undetected.
2Evidence Found in Illinois
Investigators discovered Morley hid in a hunting shed near Marion, Illinois, approximately 127 miles from the prison. Evidence at the scene included consumed beer and prepared food. Sheriff Jeff Diederich confirmed that Morley left behind a handwritten apology note before stealing a truck, clothing, and three firearms from the farm property.
3Tracking the Fugitive
Morley abandoned an initial stolen truck before walking three miles through dense fields and woods to reach the Illinois farm. Security cameras captured his movements along Route 13, but the difficult terrain hindered immediate detection. Troopers eventually utilized roadside cameras and helicopter surveillance to track his subsequent movements across state lines.
4Capture in Missouri
The Missouri State Highway Patrol apprehended Morley near Kansas City on Tuesday after receiving intelligence that he was traveling west on Interstate 70. His vehicle became stuck in mud, leading to his arrest. He was found in possession of two rifles and a shotgun and remained compliant during the police encounter.
5Legal Status and Charges
Morley is currently held at the Lafayette County jail in Lexington, Missouri. He faces federal charges for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution in Tennessee and being a felon in possession of a firearm in Missouri. District Attorney Danny Goodman Jr. intends to file additional charges, though his return to Tennessee remains pending.
6Previous Murder Conviction
Morley was serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of his co-worker, Cody Birchfield. Birchfield’s body was discovered in a box beneath Morley’s home after a weeks-long disappearance. Morley’s prior criminal history also includes convictions for aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest during a previous high-speed chase.
7Investigation into Assistance
Despite the complexity of his week-long evasion, Sheriff Diederich stated there is no current evidence suggesting Morley received external help. Officials remain puzzled by his decision to travel to Marion and his eventual route toward Kansas City, which is over 350 miles away from his initial point of escape in Tennessee.
8Ongoing Procedural Uncertainties
While federal authorities have interviewed Morley, the timeline for his extradition to Tennessee is not yet established. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed that all available information regarding his movements has been released to the public. Further legal proceedings will determine the scope of additional penalties for his escape and subsequent crimes.
