ArchDaily Launches 2027 Student Project Awards with Dropcity Partnership
Global architecture students are invited to propose urban interventions for Milan Design Week exhibition.
1Global Competition Call
ArchDaily has officially opened submissions for the second edition of its Student Project Awards. Partnering with the Milan-based center Dropcity, the platform invites students worldwide to explore the theme Making the City. Participants must submit their architectural proposals by January 31, 2027, to be considered for this international recognition opportunity.
2Focus on Urban Challenges
The competition addresses pressing global issues including climate change, resource scarcity, and rapid urbanization. Students are encouraged to identify specific urban needs and respond with precise, experimental architectural interventions. The goal is to bridge the gap between large-scale city planning and tangible, site-specific solutions that can be tested and explored.
3Design Scope and Scale
Proposals may encompass various urban elements such as infrastructure, ecology, mobility, and shared public spaces. The interventions can be fixed or mobile, singular or replicable, and infrastructural or playful in nature. Regardless of the physical scale, the project must demonstrate a clear ability to translate complex urban questions into functional architectural propositions.
4Submission Requirements
Applicants must provide comprehensive documentation to narrate their design intentions effectively. Required materials include detailed plans, sections, technical drawings, and conceptual sketches. A written statement is mandatory to explain the project story and its specific response to the Making the City theme, ensuring the design intent is communicated clearly to the jury.
5Winning Project Benefits
Three winning projects will be selected for partial realization at the Dropcity facility in Milan. This center provides access to specialized fabrication workshops, prototyping labs, and exhibition spaces. One representative from each winning team will travel to Italy to construct their prototype, gaining hands-on experience in a professional architectural environment.
6Milan Design Week Integration
The prototypes constructed by the winning students will be presented publicly during the prestigious Milan Design Week. This exhibition provides a global platform for students to showcase their work to industry professionals. It serves as a bridge between academic research and real-world application, highlighting the potential impact of student-led architectural innovation.
7Eligibility and Access
Participation is restricted to students currently subscribed to ArchDaily Campus. The competition emphasizes the role of classrooms and workshops as incubators for future architectural thought. By leveraging the platform's resources, students are expected to expand the traditional definition of architecture and engage with interdisciplinary approaches to solve modern urban problems effectively.
8Strategic Industry Impact
This partnership highlights the growing importance of experimental prototyping in architectural education. By moving from theoretical concepts to physical realization, the awards foster a culture of testing and adaptation. The initiative underscores how small-scale, precise interventions can offer viable solutions to the complex, systemic challenges facing modern cities across the globe.
