Angelo Renna Proposes Floating Modular Island for Florence's Arno River

A seasonal, demountable platform featuring 39 trees designed for public cultural gatherings.

1Innovative Riverfront Architectural Proposal

Architect Angelo Renna has introduced the Firenze Little Island, a conceptual floating platform designed for the Arno River in Florence. This demountable structure aims to create a seasonal public space for cultural events, orchestral performances, and recreation. It is specifically sited along the Pescaia weir, where regulated water flow ensures stability.

2Modular Design and Construction

The installation utilizes lightweight, reversible modular pontoons commonly found in jetty construction. These are topped with a timber beam substructure and finished decking to create a stable surface. The design is inspired by the historic 1471 Pianta della Catena, aiming to reconnect the modern city with its traditional riverfront heritage.

3Circular Tree-Lined Perimeter

A defining feature of the platform is a circular planter ring standing one meter high. This perimeter accommodates 39 mature trees, which serve as both a spatial boundary and an environmental buffer. The trees provide natural shading and improve the localized microclimate through enhanced air circulation for visitors on the deck.

4Seasonal Flood Risk Mitigation

Engineered for the specific environmental challenges of the Arno, the structure is fully demountable. Before the onset of autumn and winter flood conditions, the pontoons, decking, and planters are disassembled. This modular strategy ensures the platform can be safely transported and stored away during the river's high-risk seasonal periods.

5Municipal Nursery Integration

The project includes a logistical plan for the maintenance of the 39 trees during the off-season. When the platform is disassembled, the root systems are moved to municipal nurseries. This ensures the health of the vegetation is preserved throughout the winter months, allowing for reassembly when the summer season returns.

6Project Development and Support

The proposal gained initial municipal backing in 2024 and received support from Heritage Superintendent Antonella Ranaldi in early 2026. Although municipal plans for the project are currently paused, the design remains a significant architectural vision for urban re-integration. It highlights a low-impact approach to utilizing historic waterways for modern civic engagement.

7Urban Context and Location

The Pescaia area was chosen because the water flow slows down significantly, creating a sheltered environment suitable for a floating structure. This location offers unique views of Florence’s main monuments and historical landmarks. The platform acts as an amphibious public space, bridging the gap between the river and the city.

8Future of Civic Spaces

Renna’s proposal reflects a growing trend in adaptive urban architecture that prioritizes seasonal flexibility. By utilizing modular components, the project demonstrates how cities can activate underused riverfronts without permanent environmental disruption. The success of such designs depends on balancing cultural utility with the rigorous demands of seasonal river management.
