Florida's Spaceport Sees Decline in Launches

SpaceX to reduce launches from Florida until Starship arrives.

1Change at Florida's Spaceport

SpaceX made Florida's Space Coast the busiest spaceport in the world. However, this year, the number of launches from Florida will significantly decrease until Starship arrives. The Falcon 9 rocket has been launching primarily from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center for the Starlink satellite network. Last year, there were 165 Falcon 9 launches.

2Shift to the West Coast

In 2024, SpaceX has conducted more launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This trend will continue for the rest of the year. SpaceX Vice President Kiko Dontchev announced that the last Starlink mission from Cape Canaveral took place this week. The launch rate in Florida will drop from eight-nine per month to around two.

3Falcon 9's Record

This week's launch was significant as it marked the 37th flight of Falcon 9's first-stage booster, setting a new record. The launch, which occurred just before sunrise, also provided East Coast observers with a chance to see the Falcon 9 in action. Falcon 9 is considered the most reliable launch vehicle in history.

4Starlink's Future

SpaceX has conducted 260 Starlink missions from Florida. However, future Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches will carry customer payloads. For example, on August 30, Falcon Heavy will launch NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. In mid-September, Falcon 9 will send a four-person crew to the International Space Station.

5Transition to Starship

SpaceX plans to phase out Falcon 9 for commercial missions, making way for Starship. Starship is expected to carry larger and more powerful Starlink V3 satellites compared to Falcon 9. Preparations are ongoing for Starship's first launch from Florida, which is likely to occur by mid-2027.

6Starship's Next Test

SpaceX plans to conduct the next test flight of Starship (Flight 14) next month. This flight will carry Starlink V3 satellites to low Earth orbit from Starbase in Texas. Starship's first launch from Florida is expected around mid-2027.

7Customer Concerns

SpaceX's plans to retire Falcon 9 have raised concerns among customers. There are questions about the availability of reliable launch services post-2028. The transition to Starship and the phasing out of Falcon 9 will take time, leaving some uncertainty in the industry.

8A New Era in Space Race

SpaceX's transition to Starship marks the beginning of a new era in the space industry. This shift will increase launch capacity and reduce costs. However, the decline in launch activity at Florida's spaceport could reshape the region's role in the space industry.
