Flooding and travel disruptions expected across large parts of the country.

1Heavy Rainfall Continues

Large parts of the UK will face heavy showers and thunderstorms on Thursday. The Met Office has maintained a yellow thunderstorm warning for Northern England and North Wales. The rain will move southwards and eastwards during the day, affecting Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, and Southern England.

2Travel and Transport Disruptions

Drivers have been warned about slippery surfaces and potential flooding caused by the rain. RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis stated that light rain after prolonged dry weather mixes oil, fuel, and rubber deposits on roads, increasing the risk of skidding.

3Temperatures Drop

Temperatures are expected to fall with the rain, remaining below the August average in some areas. Thursday afternoon highs will range between 13-23°C. This will be the first day since June 29th when temperatures fail to reach 25°C anywhere in the UK.

4Cause of Flood Risk

Low pressure replacing high pressure has led to the formation of large storm clouds. These clouds bring torrential downpours accompanied by hail and thunder. Areas with hardened ground after prolonged hot and dry weather are particularly at risk of flash flooding.

5Rainfall Movement

Northern England and North Wales will bear the brunt of the thunderstorms in the morning. The rain will move southwards during the day, affecting Wales, Central, and Southern England. Scotland and Northern Ireland will also experience showers, but they will be less intense.

6Drought Persists

Despite the rain, experts warn that the drought affecting large parts of the UK will not end immediately. Sustained and heavy rainfall is needed to replenish water supplies. However, it will not be clear whether this has occurred until late winter.

7Regional Variations

Rainfall has been below normal in most parts of the UK this summer. However, Aultbea in the Scottish Highlands recorded 389.6 mm of rain, more than one and a half times the seasonal average and just 10.2 mm short of its wettest summer on record.

8Weather Outlook for Coming Days

Temperatures will drop further on Friday, remaining below the August average. Nighttime temperatures will fall into single digits, with lows of 3-4°C in parts of Scotland and Northern England. Weekend daytime temperatures will rise slightly, but rain will decrease, giving way to more sunshine.
