SOM's tiered skyscraper rises on Chicago's lakefront
A modern architectural marvel takes shape along Lake Michigan.
1An architectural icon emerges
Designed by SOM, the North Tower features a tiered design reaching 261 meters at the confluence of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Its glass-clad concrete and steel structure adds a contemporary touch to the city's skyline. Slated for completion in 2027, the project marks a significant step in the area's transformation.
2Traditional details, modern interpretation
The skyscraper's tapering glass facade draws inspiration from Chicago's traditional bay windows, with metal details reflecting Lake Michigan's movement. Concealed mechanical systems create a clean exterior profile, blending functionality with sleek aesthetics in this architectural masterpiece.
3Enhancing urban life
Upon completion, the North Tower will house 635 residences, including 127 affordable units. A ground-level plaza will serve both residents and visitors, creating a new gateway to downtown Chicago from the lakefront. This development promises to redefine the city's waterfront experience.
4Harmonious twin towers
The North Tower will be complemented by the upcoming South Tower, together completing the 400 Lake Shore Drive project. Angled relative to each other, the towers preserve view corridors while establishing a distinctive architectural presence in the Streeterville neighborhood.
5Environmental responsiveness
The building's faceted glass curtain wall dynamically responds to changing light and weather conditions along the lakefront. This geometric design provides residents with panoramic views while creating a visually striking exterior that changes throughout the day.
6Global architectural trends
SOM's Chicago project joins innovative high-rise developments worldwide, from Sydney's record-breaking timber tower to Seoul's 'living artwork' skyscrapers. These groundbreaking structures are redefining urban identities through bold architectural statements.
