Historic adobe structure transformed into modern home in Mexico
Colar studio completes earthquake-resistant adobe house project in Chiapas
1Rebirth of historic adobe structure
Colar Architecture Studio renovated a dilapidated adobe structure in Chiapas, Mexico, transforming it into a 162-square-meter single-story home. Named Casa Estelí, the project reinforced 30cm-thick adobe walls with vertical supports and continuous wooden beams. Special engineering solutions were implemented to enhance the structure's earthquake resistance. The use of local materials preserved the authentic character of the original construction while meeting modern safety standards.
2Independent timber roof system
The project's most striking feature is its self-supporting timber roof system that adds no additional load to the structure. With wide overhangs protecting the adobe walls from erosion, this roof also serves as a unifying design element connecting the original structure with two new brick volumes. The roof's independent structural system was carefully designed not to stress the existing adobe construction. This intervention significantly extended the building's lifespan while maintaining its historical integrity.
3Harmonious extensions with local materials
Two new volumes flanking the adobe structure were built using locally produced clay bricks measuring 26cm thick. Specially manufactured bricks were selected to match the color and texture of the original structure. The rat-trap bond system provided insulation while maintaining wall thicknesses consistent with the original construction. Interior spaces feature a minimalist material palette of exposed timber and clay flooring, creating visual continuity throughout the home.
4Spatial organization and functionality
The home's layout begins with a spacious veranda leading to an open-plan living and dining area illuminated by clerestory windows. One side of the adobe structure houses a study, bathroom and utility spaces, while an open-air corridor connects to the larger extension containing two bedrooms and a shared bathroom with glossy green tiles. This thoughtful arrangement balances private and communal spaces while maintaining the building's historical character. Natural light floods the interiors through strategically placed openings.
5Innovative solutions for seismic zones
The project's most significant engineering achievement was reinforcing the unknown-quality adobe structure against earthquake risks. The studio developed solutions that maintained stability without compromising the building's original behavior. Vertical reinforcements and continuous wooden beams increased seismic resistance, while the independent roof system prevented additional structural loads. This approach sets a benchmark for adapting historical structures to modern safety standards, particularly in earthquake-prone regions.
6Sustainable and local architecture
The project was executed entirely with local materials and traditional construction techniques, minimizing its carbon footprint. The harmonious earth tones of adobe and brick create visual unity throughout. The building's thermal performance was optimized through thick walls and natural ventilation systems, perfectly suited to the region's climate conditions. This approach demonstrates how vernacular architecture can meet contemporary sustainability standards while preserving cultural heritage.
7Contribution to Mexico's architectural heritage
The Casa Estelí project represents an important example of adapting Mexico's rich adobe tradition to modern needs. Colar studio has set new standards for preserving and repurposing historical structures through this project. The home also contributes to the region's tourism potential while supporting the local economy through its use of regional materials and craftsmanship. This sensitive intervention showcases how architectural heritage can be revitalized for contemporary living.
8Global benchmark in architectural restoration
Colar's Chiapas project is being recognized internationally as pioneering work in historic preservation and adaptive reuse. By combining traditional adobe techniques with contemporary engineering solutions, this approach offers valuable lessons for earthquake-prone regions worldwide. The project has gained acclaim in architectural circles as a successful implementation of sustainable design principles, demonstrating how cultural heritage and modern functionality can coexist harmoniously.
