Western Railway Develops ₹307-Crore Vande Bharat Maintenance Hub in Sabarmati
New facility aims to centralize major repairs and reduce overhaul turnaround times for trains.
1Strategic Maintenance Infrastructure Investment
Western Railway is establishing a dedicated maintenance hub at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot in Ahmedabad. This project, valued at ₹307 crore, is designed to centralize major repairs for Vande Bharat trainsets. By consolidating servicing operations, the facility aims to eliminate the logistical necessity of transporting trains to distant locations for scheduled overhauls.
2Comprehensive Facility Design Features
The facility incorporates specialized sheds for heavy repairs, wheel servicing, and electrical system overhauls. The heavy repair shed features two maintenance lines, enabling coach lifting and bogie removal. Additionally, the site includes four stabling lines totaling 2,547 meters and a completed electrical substation, ensuring all critical technical requirements are met under one roof.
3Advanced Technical Servicing Capabilities
Beyond basic maintenance, the hub will handle complex overhauls of traction motors, transformers, and sophisticated electrical systems. The wheel care shed is equipped with modern machinery for precise axle and wheel servicing. These integrated capabilities allow for a comprehensive maintenance approach, supporting the long-term operational health of the growing Vande Bharat fleet.
4Operational Efficiency and Throughput
Project plans indicate that the facility can complete SS-I maintenance on a 24-coach trainset in 30 days, while SS-II maintenance requires 45 days. This capacity allows for the annual servicing of approximately 12 trainsets under SS-I or eight under SS-II. These metrics highlight the facility's role in optimizing regional railway maintenance workflows.
5Context of Vande Bharat Expansion
Since the inaugural New Delhi-Varanasi service in February 2019, the Vande Bharat network has expanded significantly. As of July 2026, 162 services are operational nationwide. The Ahmedabad region specifically gained connectivity on September 30, 2022, with the launch of the Gandhinagar Capital–Mumbai Central route, necessitating localized support for these high-speed trainsets.
6Technological Standards of Trainsets
Vande Bharat trains represent a significant leap in Indian rail technology, featuring semi-high-speed capabilities and modern amenities. Passengers benefit from onboard Wi-Fi, GPS-based information systems, CCTV surveillance, and bio-vacuum toilets. The inclusion of executive class rotating chairs and Divyang-friendly provisions underscores the design focus on comfort and accessibility across the national network.
7Infrastructure Development Phases
The maintenance hub is being developed under Phase II of the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot project. With the heavy repair shed nearing completion and the wheel care shed already finished, the infrastructure is nearing full operational status. This phased development ensures that critical maintenance components are ready to support the expanding regional fleet.
8Strategic Impact on Rail Operations
The establishment of this hub marks a transition toward localized, high-capacity maintenance for India's semi-high-speed rail sector. By reducing the reliance on external repair facilities, Western Railway improves fleet availability and operational resilience. This investment reflects the broader strategic effort to modernize railway infrastructure in alignment with the rapid growth of Vande Bharat.
