Michigan Seniors Can Now Get Into 21 Colleges Without A Traditional Application
Michigan College Access Network launches a new portal simplifying college admissions.
1What Is the Direct Admission Program?
The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) launched the MI College Match portal on August 26, 2026. This program allows 21 public and private colleges in Michigan to send admission offers to students without the traditional application process. Students upload transcripts and answer a few questions about their interests and preferences. No application fees, essays, or recommendation letters are required.
2The Program's First Phase
The first application deadline is September 21, 2026. Students who complete their profiles by this date will receive their first round of acceptance letters by October 5 and will be entered for a chance at a $5,000 scholarship. Those who apply later will receive offers on a monthly basis. This process significantly eases the burden, especially for first-generation college students.
3Participating Colleges
Twenty-one colleges are participating in the MI College Match program. However, major institutions like the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus are not included. Each college sets its own admission criteria. For example, Kalamazoo College stated that the program changes how students find the school but does not affect admission standards.
4Michigan's College Enrollment Problem
Michigan colleges face enrollment challenges. Common App recorded a record 10.8 million applications last year, but 41% of member colleges received fewer applications than the previous year. In-state tuition at Michigan's public four-year universities averages about $14,500, and 59% of graduates leave with debt. This program aims to support colleges in attracting students.
5Scholarship Opportunities
Participating colleges can attach scholarship offers to their admission letters. This allows students to learn the actual cost of attending a school before deciding whether to enroll. This approach provides a significant advantage, especially for financially struggling students.
6National Trend: Direct Admission
Direct admission programs are gaining traction nationwide. California's SB 640 law expands the CSU system's pilot program from 43 school districts to 937. Michigan's model is different: it is run by a nonprofit organization and includes private colleges. The EAB matching software used in the Alabama Direct Admission Initiative is also employed here.
7The Program's Future
The number of participating colleges may increase. The list grew from 20 to 21 in the last two days, and MCAN is promoting the program through its 355 K-12 partner sites. The participation of larger regional campuses could be a significant step in addressing Michigan's college enrollment issues.
8Importance for Students
This program offers a significant opportunity, especially for first-generation college students. By eliminating the challenges of the traditional application process, it simplifies access to higher education. Additionally, admission letters with scholarship offers enable students to plan their finances earlier.
