UK's Largest Wind Farm to Be Rebuilt

Fewer but larger turbines will increase electricity production.

BBC News1 min

1Renewal Process Begins

The UK's largest wind farm, Whitelee, is nearing the end of its 20-year operational life. Owner Scottish Power Renewables plans to replace the existing 215 turbines with fewer but larger ones. This renewal project will double electricity production.

2Project Details

The £1.5 billion project will be completed in three phases, installing 124 new turbines. Each turbine will be 110 meters taller than the current ones. The project will take 10 years to complete and will be fully operational by 2035.

3Environmental Impact

The new turbines, although larger, are designed to have less environmental impact. The project will help restore the area to its natural state and maintain public access. Additionally, 99% of the old turbines will be recycled.

4Increased Energy Production

Once the renewal project is completed, Whitelee's electricity production will increase from 539 megawatts to 1 gigawatt. This capacity can meet the electricity needs of approximately 650,000 homes.

5Economic Contribution

The project will contribute around £330 million to the Scottish economy. It will also create new job opportunities in the renewable energy sector and enhance energy security.

6Steps Towards the Future

The renewal of Whitelee sets an example for other wind farms in the UK. Analysts predict that many wind farms will undergo similar renewals in the next decade.
