STUDIO SHOO Launches Wheeled Cabinet Inspired by Armenian Volcanic Tuff Stone
The mobile storage unit translates Yerevan's pink volcanic architecture into functional creative furniture.
1Architectural Heritage Meets Furniture Design
Designer Shushana Khachatrian of STUDIO SHOO has unveiled the TUFF Pencil Cabinet, a mobile storage solution directly inspired by Yerevan's architectural landscape. The piece references the distinctive pink volcanic tuff stone that defines Armenia's capital, transforming regional geological history into a tactile object for contemporary studios and creative workspaces.
2Translating Street Culture into Form
Beyond raw geological textures, the cabinet incorporates cultural references from Yerevan's urban landscape. The design reflects spontaneous chalk drawings, handwritten names, and vernacular motifs frequently etched into porous tuff walls. STUDIO SHOO translates these fleeting public interactions into a structured, mobile design language tailored specifically for creative tools.
3Tiered Configurations for Studio Storage
The TUFF Pencil Cabinet is manufactured in two primary colorways that offer distinct functional layouts. The yellow model features a single tier with a top-opening drawer, while the pink iteration provides a two-tiered structure combining a top-access unit with a traditional pull-out lower drawer for varied supplies.
4Multifunctional Adaptability in Spatial Use
The pink version provides extended utility beyond simple stationery storage. Its upper surface is engineered to function as an occasional coffee table during collaborative work sessions. This dual-purpose design allows creative workers to shift seamlessly between drawing, organizing utensils, and casual social interaction within compact studio layouts.
5Mobility as Core Functional Mechanism
Both configurations are equipped with integrated wheels, ensuring fluid mobility across different working environments. Rather than acting as static storage furniture, the cabinets are engineered to accompany designers between drafting boards, desks, and communal workshop areas, responding directly to the dynamic spatial needs of modern artistic practices.
6Materiality and Palette Selection
The chosen color palette of vivid yellow and muted pink directly mirrors variations of regional tuff stone. The compact form balances structural durability with visual lightness, avoiding the bulky presence typical of conventional industrial workshop storage while maintaining the tactile resonance of Armenia's built and geological environment.
7Editorial Feature on Global Design
The project was submitted through designboom's community submission platform and curated by editor Christina Vergopoulou. The initiative highlights how independent design studios use localized material narratives to address universal organizational problems, bridging niche architectural references with accessible, mass-market functional design concepts for international creative audiences.
8Redefining Mobile Storage Paradigms
The TUFF Pencil Cabinet demonstrates how narrative-driven product design can revitalize utilitarian workspace furniture. By combining cultural preservation with ergonomic mobility and convertible surfaces, STUDIO SHOO presents a modular storage solution that challenges conventional aesthetic standards in organizational product design across contemporary creative industries.
