5 email alias services to protect your privacy
Secure alternatives to sharing your primary email address
1What are email aliases?
Email aliases are alternative addresses that let you sign up for online services without revealing your real email. This system helps avoid spam, reduces the impact of data leaks, and gives you control over your digital footprint. The core principle is forwarding all emails to your primary inbox while keeping your identity private.
2SimpleLogin: Proton-powered solution
SimpleLogin is a robust email alias service developed under Proton. It offers custom domain support, reply functionality, and integration with Proton Pass. Being open-source enhances its trustworthiness. The free version allows 10 aliases, while paid plans provide extensive customization for power users.
3Addy.io: Budget-friendly option
Addy.io stands out with unlimited free aliases, making it ideal for privacy beginners. Paid plans start at just $1/month for advanced features. Its open-source nature and simple interface are appealing, though it lacks some sophisticated capabilities found in premium services.
4Firefox Relay: Browser integration
Built into Firefox, this service provides up to 50 free aliases. The browser extension enables seamless use during sign-ups. Using @mozmail.com domains helps avoid suspicion. Reply functionality requires a paid plan, but the service excels in convenience for regular Firefox users.
5Apple and DuckDuckGo alternatives
Apple's 'Hide My Email' works exclusively for iCloud+ subscribers, while DuckDuckGo offers free @duck.com addresses. Apple's solution is tightly integrated with iOS, whereas DuckDuckGo removes email trackers but may expose your real address when replying.
6Why use email aliases?
Email addresses are critical vulnerability points in digital security. Alias services prevent phishing attacks, reduce spam, and protect your main account during data breaches. They're also perfect solutions for separating professional and personal communications while maintaining privacy across platforms.
