ESPN is raising prices on most streaming subscriptions

Price hikes will also affect Disney+ bundles

Engadget2 min

1ESPN subscription prices are increasing

ESPN is raising prices across all its subscription plans. Effective September 17, the increases will apply to both monthly and annual plans. The ESPN Unlimited subscription will rise from $30 to $32 per month. The annual plan will increase from $300 to $320. This marks the platform's first price hike since its launch.

2Select tier also affected

The ESPN Select tier isn't immune to the increases. This ad-supported package, which offers live events, documentaries and studio shows (but no live channel feeds), will go from $13 to $14 monthly. The annual Select subscription will increase from $130 to $140. The tier provides a more budget-friendly option for casual viewers.

3Disney+ bundles impacted

The price changes will ripple through Disney+ bundles. The ad-supported package combining Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Select will increase from $20 to $22 monthly. The ad-free version will rise from $30 to $33. Bundles including ESPN Unlimited are temporarily spared, as 80% of Unlimited subscribers already use Disney+/Hulu bundles.

4Industry-wide trend

ESPN is implementing its first price increase since launching its streaming service last year. However, annual price hikes have become standard in the industry. Platforms like Peacock and Netflix regularly increase subscription fees. Analysts expect ESPN might implement another increase next September, following this pattern.

5Unlimited tier details

ESPN Unlimited provides complete access to the platform's content and affiliated live broadcast feeds. The $2 increase brings the monthly cost to $32, while the annual plan rises by $20 to $320. This premium package targets die-hard sports fans, offering the most comprehensive ESPN experience available through streaming.

6Select package coverage

The ESPN Select package offers broad content excluding live channel broadcasts. It includes ad-supported live events, bonus content, original documentaries and studio shows. The $1 monthly increase brings the cost to $14, while the annual subscription sees a $10 hike to $140. This tier serves viewers who want ESPN content without premium features.

7Disney bundle differences

Disney's various bundle options are priced according to ESPN access levels. Packages including ESPN Unlimited are temporarily exempt from increases, as most subscribers already use Disney+/Hulu. The $3 increase for ad-free bundles is particularly notable. This pricing strategy reflects the company's segmented approach to streaming services.

8Streaming industry outlook

ESPN's move mirrors broader trends in digital streaming. Platforms are passing increased content production costs to subscribers, especially in sports broadcasting where licensing fees are substantial. The key question is whether consumers are willing to pay more for expanded content offerings, particularly as multiple services implement similar price increases.
