Shape-Memory Nitinol Sofa Self-Deploys with Single Motion

Hand-woven alloy furniture redefines compact living with aerospace material tech.

1Rethinking Upholstery

Seoul-based industrial designer Jisu Yoon unveiled Re-flat pack, a transformable furniture system replacing conventional foam with nitinol - a nickel-titanium alloy used in medical stents and aerospace applications. This innovation combines structural support and cushioning in a single material system. The design emerged from limitations of traditional flat-pack furniture that cannot return to compact form after assembly, offering new possibilities for adaptable living spaces.

2Material Breakthrough

After eliminating compression-prone foam during 1.7 years of research, Yoon tested materials including glass fiber and steel wire before selecting nitinol for its unique properties. The alloy's elasticity, shape memory, and load-bearing capacity enable the 7kg sofa to transform from a 250mm cylinder to a 700mm seating unit. 3D-printed PLA joints connect nitinol wires hand-woven through red fabric cords, creating adhesive-free construction that maintains structural integrity through collective tension.

3Umbrella-Inspired Mechanism

The deployment system draws inspiration from umbrella mechanics, allowing the sofa to expand from a 1430mm-tall column to 600mm-deep seating with one motion. A central cord guides the transformation while 3D-printed hubs regulate wire tension. Prototyping involved dozens of connector components and 1:10 scale structural tests. The radial base structure stabilizes the woven tension system that supports human weight without separate frame elements.

4Evolution of Flat-Pack

Building on 160+ years of collapsible furniture history since Thonet's No.14 chair, this design reimagines how large upholstered items can become repeatedly transformable. The project bridges aerospace material technology with furniture design, creating pieces that adapt to changing environments. Its 1.7-year development included early concept models, material experiments, and multiple iterations of 3D-printed connection components to perfect the deployment mechanism.

5Award-Winning Innovation

The project gained recognition as a finalist in the Korea+Sweden Young Design Award by IKEA Korea and Swedish Embassy. Exhibited at Design Korea 2025 and Milan Design Week's 'No Space for Waste' exhibition in 2026, it later won the Couch Sofa category at SIT Furniture Design Awards. These accolades validate nitinol's potential to revolutionize furniture systems beyond initial transportation benefits.

6Prototyping Journey

From initial ideation models to full-scale working prototypes, the development process involved rigorous testing of deployment mechanisms and material combinations. Early structural experiments at 1:10 scale helped refine the tension system before finalizing the hand-woven nitinol wire configuration. The 3D-printed central hub went through multiple iterations to achieve optimal tension control and form-locking capabilities.

7Integrated Structure

Unlike conventional sofas requiring separate frames and cushions, this design unifies structural and surface functions through nitinol's properties. The woven skeleton-skin composite bears weight collectively while maintaining flexibility. 3D-printed joints precisely position each wire to create uniform tension distribution. This innovation demonstrates how advanced materials can simplify furniture construction without compromising durability.

8Future of Adaptable Furniture

Re-flat pack pioneers a new category of furniture that responds to modern needs for flexibility and sustainability. By applying shape-memory technology to domestic objects, it suggests future interiors could dynamically reconfigure. The project's success with aerospace materials in furniture design opens possibilities for other cross-industry material applications, pointing toward more adaptive, space-efficient living solutions.
