Hommeboys Interiors Completes Modern Residential Remodel in Los Altos Hills

A 6,000-square-foot home transformation blends organic textures with modern architectural precision for a tech-focused family.

1Strategic Location and Context

Los Altos Hills serves as a private, semi-rural enclave for Silicon Valley professionals, characterized by dense woodlands and rolling hills. Hommeboys Interiors, led by Alex Mutter-Rottmayer and Austin Carrier, undertook a complete gut remodel of a 6,000-square-foot residence here. The project aimed to integrate the structure into its natural surroundings effectively.

2Exterior Architectural Modifications

The exterior shell underwent significant changes to better harmonize with the landscape, now featuring stone and timber cladding. A critical structural modification involved installing an expansive gable window wall at the rear of the home. This addition allows natural light to penetrate deep into the interior, bridging the gap between indoor and outdoor environments.

3Material Palette and Texture

The interior design relies heavily on a curated palette of wood and stone to establish warmth. Oak paneling with pronounced grain covers walls and ceilings, diffusing light throughout the space. This organic foundation is balanced by refined materials, including dramatically veined marbles, hand-applied plaster, and patinated steel, creating a sophisticated, layered aesthetic.

4Sculptural Fireplace Design Elements

Three distinct fireplaces anchor the home's primary living areas, each serving as a functional sculpture. The living room features an angular, plaster-clad fireplace that dictates the room's furniture layout. Meanwhile, the family room utilizes hand-patinated Corten steel panels to create a moody, intimate atmosphere, showcasing the designers' focus on material tension and symmetry.

5Curated Furniture and Decor

The designers integrated pieces from their own Haus of Hommeboys line, such as hide-covered poufs and castellated planters, to enhance the tactile experience. These are complemented by sourced classics, including a vintage Julep sofa from Tacchini and a Raymonde Leduc coffee table. Each selection reinforces the home's blend of modern sensibility and organic comfort.

6Kitchen as Central Hub

The kitchen functions as the heart of the residence, utilizing oak paneling, Calacatta Monet marble, and natural stone. A 15-foot-long custom lighting fixture from Ovature Studio acts as a graphic counterpoint to the organic materials. This space is specifically designed to accommodate both daily family life and the couple's frequent hosting of guests.

7Design Philosophy and Intent

Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier aimed to avoid a sterile, fixed aesthetic by prioritizing natural materials that offer a timeless quality. The primary bedroom fireplace, finished in linear-textured plaster, provides a bold contrast to the otherwise serene environment. The project successfully balances grand architectural scale with the approachable, warm requirements of a family home.

8Project Outcome and Impact

The completed home functions as a foil for the family's lifestyle, successfully dissolving the barrier between the indoors and the natural world. By focusing on textural depth and light diffusion, the designers transformed a cold structure into a sophisticated, inviting residence. This project highlights the firm's ability to execute complex, large-scale residential renovations.
