Ruble Stablecoin A7A5 Reaches $140 Billion in Transaction Volume
Russia's ruble-backed stablecoin A7A5 is primarily used for China-focused payments.
1Growth of the Ruble Stablecoin
According to PSB Bank CEO Pyotr Fradkov, the ruble-backed stablecoin A7A5 has reached approximately $140 billion in transaction volume since its February 2025 launch. The token is primarily used for cross-border payments, with 90% of transactions linked to China. The platform processes around 2,000 payments daily and serves 15,000 regular users, highlighting its adoption in specific trade corridors.
2Concentrated Token Distribution
A Crystal Intelligence report dated July 30, 2026, revealed that 94.5% of A7A5's supply is held in a single wallet. With $475 million worth of A7A5 issued across Tron and Ethereum networks, $468 million sits in one address. This wallet was created on May 4, 2026—18 days after Grinex exchange shutdown—and received nearly all its balance from a single distributor, indicating extreme centralization.
3Sharp Decline in Trading Volume
Daily transfer volume for A7A5 plummeted 97% from its March 2026 peak of $65 million to under $8 million by July 2026. This decline coincided with the shutdown of Grinex, A7A5's primary trading venue, and network restrictions. Crystal Intelligence noted that much remaining activity in the A7A5/USDT pair appears to involve wash trading, with single addresses occasionally constituting nearly half of daily volume.
4Payment Network Architecture
A7A5 operates through a Kyrgyzstan-registered token and a network of settlement centers designed to maintain payment functionality even if individual participants lose access to financial channels. PSB Bank's Fradkov stated, "The system is built to continue payments despite sanctions." This structure aims to circumvent international financial isolation, positioning A7A5 as a sanctions-resistant payment rail for Russia-China trade.
5Sanctions Exposure
A7A5 and related entities face international sanctions, with Uniswap delisting the token. TRM Labs' "Big Shor" investigation linked over $72 billion in A7A5 transaction volume to activities it classified as illicit. TRM continues monitoring flows associated with the token post-investigation. These developments highlight significant regulatory risks surrounding A7A5's operation in global financial systems.
6Wash Trading Suspicions
Crystal Intelligence's report suggests much remaining public activity in the A7A5/USDT pair may involve wash trading. Instances were observed where single addresses accounted for nearly half of daily volume, raising questions about the token's genuine market depth. Such patterns indicate potential artificial inflation of trading metrics, undermining confidence in A7A5's organic liquidity.
7China-Centric Usage
90% of A7A5 transactions are China-linked, positioning the stablecoin as a payment tool primarily for Russia-China trade. As Western sanctions impact Russian businesses, A7A5 serves as a financial bridge to China. This focus reflects broader trends of deepening Russia-China financial integration amid geopolitical tensions, with A7A5 emerging as a specialized solution for sanctioned trade corridors.
8Geopolitical Significance
The A7A5 project carries geopolitical significance beyond being a financial instrument. It provides critical infrastructure enabling Russia to sustain trade despite financial isolation. However, extreme centralization, wash trading suspicions, and sanctions exposure pose substantial challenges to its long-term viability. A7A5 exemplifies how stablecoins are increasingly weaponized in economic conflicts between nation-states.
