West Garden Florist: Architecture Bridging Nature and Community
LUO studio's green space project in Beijing redefines public areas.
1Project Location and Context
The West Garden Florist project is located in Haidian Park, Beijing. This park serves as one of the district's major urban green spaces for daily recreation, exercise, and nature encounters. The project was designed in line with the trend of urban public parks transforming into more open, inclusive, and human-centered environments. Spanning 84 square meters, the structure is harmoniously positioned within the surrounding natural landscape.
2Architectural Approach and Design Team
Designed by LUO studio, the project team includes Luo Yujie, Wang Beilei, and Hong Lun. The concept developed from the idea that small service buildings could serve purposes beyond functional requirements. The team envisioned the space as a mediator between people and nature. The use of wood as a primary material stands out, enhancing the structure's harmony with its natural surroundings.
3Functional Features and Usage
The project combines a florist shop and café functions. It offers park visitors both a resting point and opportunities to interact with nature. The design demonstrates the potential of small-scale service structures in urban green spaces. Completed in 2025, the project was built by Shangmuzao (Beijing) Architectural Technology Co., Ltd.
4Material Choices and Structural Details
Wood was predominantly used in the project, supporting its sustainability and harmony-with-nature principles. Material selections contribute to the space's warm and inviting atmosphere. Photographs of the structure were taken by Weiqi Jin and Yumeng Zhu. Architectural details reflect a successful synthesis of traditional and modern design elements.
5Social Impact and Public Space Utilization
West Garden Florist serves as an example of urban public space transformation. The project provides park users not just with a functional space but also a platform that encourages social interaction. Highlighting the importance of green spaces in Beijing's urban fabric, the project aims to become a gathering point for the local community.
6Architectural Photography and Visual Presentation
Project photographs were taken to emphasize the space's relationship with natural light and material textures. Images captured by Weiqi Jin and Yumeng Zhu showcase the structure's harmony with its surroundings. The photos reflect the project's dynamic character by capturing its atmosphere at different times of day.
7Project Team and Collaboration
The client for the project is Beijing West Garden Culture Co., Ltd. The design and implementation process features collaboration among professionals from different disciplines. Led by LUO studio, the team addressed not only the architectural design but also the space's functional and social dimensions in detail. The project sits at the intersection of urban design and landscape architecture disciplines.
8New Approaches in Urban Design
The West Garden Florist project demonstrates the potential of small-scale interventions in urban public spaces. Going beyond traditional service structures, it transforms space into a tool for social interaction and natural connection. In dense urban fabrics like Beijing, such designs are expected to enrich green space usage. The project was featured on ArchDaily in 2026, gaining international exposure.
