Samsung unveils next-gen memory technologies

New memory solutions developed for AI data centers introduced to market

Engadget2 min

1New memory architecture

At the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) event in Santa Clara, Samsung introduced a new memory architecture called zHBM. This technology vertically stacks HBM memory directly on top of AI accelerators. Compared to traditional side-by-side placement, this method can boost performance up to eight times. The next-generation wafer bonding technology also offers 10 times higher memory density than current HBM5 while tripling energy efficiency.

2V-NAND revolution

The company also announced a new type of V-NAND memory called V10 BV-NAND. This technology uses a new bonding architecture capable of stacking over 400 memory layers. It provides approximately 58% higher memory density compared to the previous V9 generation. This solution, which will be used in SSDs and memory cards, also offers significant improvements in read, write and I/O performance.

3Dedicated solution for Edge AI

Another innovation called zNAND-O offers high space efficiency, improved I/O performance and low latency. Designed specifically for edge AI environments, this solution aims to improve efficiency in local AI processing. Samsung's other innovation in this field is LPDDR5X-PIM, the first LPDDR memory with processing-in-memory technology.

4Market dominance

Samsung and SK Hynix stand out as the two companies controlling the majority of memory production. However, they are struggling to keep up with the demand surge created by the current AI boom. This situation is causing significant price increases in memory, raising costs for consumer electronics products.

5Focus on AI data centers

Most new memory technologies are being developed for the needs of AI data centers. This is driving up prices for consumer segment products while making access to high-performance memory solutions more difficult. Gaming consoles, smartphones and laptops are among the product categories most affected by these price increases.

6Details of technological leap

zHBM technology represents a radical departure from traditional memory architecture. This approach, which minimizes data transfer between memory and processor, has the potential to revolutionize training processes for large-scale AI models. Advances in 3D stacking technology are pushing transistor density to unprecedented levels.

7Industrial impacts

These developments in memory technology have the potential to radically transform data center designs. Efficiency improvements reduce the environmental cost of AI workloads, while high-density solutions minimize physical space requirements. This trend promises significant reductions in cloud computing and AI infrastructure costs.

8Consumer implications

It remains uncertain when and at what prices these new technologies will reach the consumer segment. AI-focused product development strategies risk pushing traditional consumer electronics to the background. Experts warn that the upward trend in memory prices could continue for another 2-3 years.
