Modular Timber Library in Amsterdam: The Neighborhood's Living Room

OBA Next Lab serves as a flexible and sustainable community hub in Amsterdam-Zuidoost.

1An Innovative Community Hub

OBA Next Lab is a modular timber library and community center spanning 1,175 square meters in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. Designed by Matter Makers, AWR, and BAZ Studio, the structure combines a library, cinema, café, and event spaces. The project aims to respond to generational shifts in knowledge sharing. Flexible walls and movable furniture allow the space to be easily reconfigured.

2Flexible and Sustainable Design

OBA Next Lab consists of 24 prefabricated modular units and was constructed using dry-fit panels, columns, and beams. To avoid the use of poured concrete, it was placed on prefabricated foundations. At the heart of the structure is a double-height glazed atrium. This atrium features a pastel pink 'sitting hill' surrounded by plants, extending into both the interior and the adjacent square.

3The Central Pink Sitting Hill

At the center of the design is a giant pink sitting hill. This three-dimensional structure serves as both seating and a spatial focal point. It begins inside the atrium and flows outward into the public square. Visitors can read in hidden nooks behind plants, sit during film screenings, or participate in workshops.

4Workspaces and Connections

An L-shaped block houses the library, workspaces, and maker spaces. These areas overlook the central atrium through glazed interior walls. Curtains allow daylight to enter and facilitate visual connections. Externally, the largely glazed ground floor is topped by narrow timber battens and vertical louvers, which shade the upper level.

5Solar Energy and Eco-Friendly Solutions

The roof of OBA Next Lab is covered with repurposed photovoltaic cells. These cells partially meet the building's energy needs. The project stands out for its sustainable materials and innovative design solutions. The modular structure allows the building to be easily dismantled and relocated after its planned seven-year lifespan.

6Design That Enhances Community Interaction

OBA Next Lab was designed as a meeting point for neighborhood residents. The stepped seating in the atrium is used for events and reading. The structure aims to encourage knowledge sharing while strengthening community bonds. This approach redefines the traditional concept of a library.

7Other Community Center Examples

OBA Next Lab stands out among similar community centers. Projects like the Talas Community Center in Helsinki and the Becontree Estate Community Hub in London also emphasize flexible and sustainable designs. These centers are designed to enhance community interaction and provide eco-friendly solutions.

8The Library Model of the Future

OBA Next Lab represents the library model of the future. Flexible and multifunctional spaces replace traditional bookshelves. The structure responds to the needs of the digital generation while showcasing sustainable architecture. This project redefines the role of libraries.
