NASA Opens Applications for 2027 Astronaut Candidate Class

Aspiring explorers can apply to join missions targeting the Moon and Mars.

1New Recruitment Cycle Initiated

NASA has officially opened the application window for its 2027 astronaut candidate class. This recruitment drive aims to identify individuals capable of supporting the agency's ambitious lunar and Mars exploration goals. Interested U.S. citizens must submit their completed application materials through the agency's official portal by 11:59 p.m. EST on December 3, 2025.

2Strategic Mission Objectives

The selected candidates will play a critical role in the Artemis program, which focuses on returning humans to the Moon. Beyond lunar surface operations, these astronauts will help establish a permanent Moon Base. Their work will provide the foundational systems and operational expertise necessary for future crewed missions to the planet Mars.

3Academic and Professional Requirements

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in a STEM field, such as engineering, biological science, or computer science. Alternatively, candidates can qualify through two years of doctoral work, a medical degree, or completion of a recognized Test Pilot School program. Three years of related professional experience after degree completion is strictly required.

4Flight Experience Pathways

Pilots applying for the program must meet specific flight hour thresholds to qualify. Requirements include 750 hours of pilot-in-command time in high-performance jet aircraft or 1,500 total flight hours for other fixed-wing aircraft. Rotary-wing pilots must demonstrate 1,000 total flight hours, with at least 300 hours served as pilot in command.

5Rigorous Selection Process

Beyond academic and flight credentials, candidates must pass NASA’s long-duration astronaut flight physical. The selection board prioritizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, sound judgment, and strong communication skills. These traits are essential for the high-stakes, collaborative environment required for long-duration missions beyond Earth, where teamwork is vital for mission success.

6Historical Context of Corps

Since the 1960s, NASA has selected 370 individuals to train for spaceflight missions. The current corps consists of 32 active astronauts who manage diverse responsibilities, including spacewalking and lunar geology. New recruits will join this legacy, continuing a tradition of pushing human boundaries through technical excellence and service to the nation.

7Recent Training Trends

The previous selection cycle in 2024 attracted over 8,000 applicants, resulting in the selection of 10 candidates in 2025. These individuals are currently nearing the end of their two-year training program. This established pipeline ensures a steady influx of talent to support the agency's increasingly complex and challenging space exploration objectives.

8Future of Human Exploration

The upcoming class will operate in a new era of innovation, focusing on the lunar South Pole. These missions aim to expand scientific discovery while providing tangible economic benefits. By establishing an enduring presence on the Moon, NASA prepares the next generation of explorers to lead humanity’s first crewed journey to Mars.
