Lego's Donkey Kong Arcade Brings Endless Barrel-Jumping Action
Mario creator Miyamoto reportedly approves of the nostalgic $200 Lego set launching August 1st.
1A Nostalgic Lego Masterpiece
Designed by Lego veteran Carl Merriam, the Donkey Kong arcade machine reimagines the 1981 classic with mechanical authenticity. The $200 set, which won approval from Mario creator Miyamoto, features a working barrel mechanism and playable mini-game, positioning it as a premium collector's item for adult Lego enthusiasts.
2Infinite Barrel Mechanism
The set's standout feature is its hand-cranked infinite barrel loop. A stack of 14 barrels feeds new obstacles automatically when the lever is pulled. Designer Merriam revealed he tested thousands of barrel rolls to perfect the speed, eventually achieving the right pace through strategic combinations of Lego slopes and Technic beams.
3Playable Mini-Game
Beyond display, the set offers functional gameplay: a joystick moves Mario side-to-side while a button makes him jump. At Nintendo's suggestion, poisonous barrels contain minifigure heads for added weight. The jumping mechanism works like a piano key, with a seesaw lever propelling the Mario figure upward.
4Design Challenges
Merriam recounts the struggle to make barrels roll slowly without jamming. After testing countless configurations, the solution involved rolling barrels over studs, slopes, and thinner Technic beams. The second major hurdle—returning barrels from bottom to top—was solved simply by adding more barrels to create a continuous loop.
5Nintendo Collaboration
While Lego and Nintendo have partnered closely, Merriam hasn't met Miyamoto directly—though he received word the legendary designer was 'very happy' with the execution. Nintendo provided specific feedback, including making poison barrels heavier by inserting minifigure heads inside them.
6Premium Collector's Item
Priced at $200 and launching August 1st, the set targets adult Lego collectors. Its use of original 1989 Lego barrels and intricate mechanical solutions elevate it beyond typical toys. Such collaborations continue expanding the collector's market by blending nostalgia with innovative design.
