1Measures Against VIP Betting Ads

The MLB Players Association supports banning players from appearing in personalized sportsbook ads linked to VIP or tier programs. This decision was made to combat gambling addiction. MLBPA General Counsel Jeffrey Perconte outlined this position in a response to Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representatives Paul Tonko and Valerie Foushee.

2Personalized Video Sent to FanDuel VIP

The issue arose when a personalized Bryce Harper video was reportedly sent to a FanDuel VIP customer struggling with gambling addiction. This incident prompted lawmakers to investigate MLB, MLBPA, and FanDuel. MLBPA expressed willingness to ban such ads.

3Collective Bargaining Agreement Talks

The issue has become part of collective bargaining between MLB and the players union. Discussions focus on restrictions related to player endorsements in sports betting ads. MLBPA wants players to continue endorsements but with clear boundaries.

4Limits on Player Endorsements

MLBPA General Counsel Jeffrey Perconte emphasized that player endorsement deals should not be unlimited. The union supports banning players from participating in personalized marketing campaigns tied to VIP or tier programs. Such restrictions are proposed for inclusion in the collective bargaining agreement.

5Proposals for In-Game Betting Limits

MLBPA is also pushing for restrictions on in-game bets, including those tied to hits, runs, home runs, individual pitches, or injuries. While MLB has rejected this proposal so far, the union remains persistent in pursuing it.

6Fan Protection Takes Priority

MLBPA argues that protecting fans should take precedence over gambling revenue. Despite MLB's resistance, negotiations continue, and players remain committed to advocating for this proposal.

7Past Measures on Microbetting

MLB previously addressed concerns about microbetting. In November 2025, authorized gaming operators limited pitch-level bets to $200 and excluded them from parlays. This decision was made to mitigate integrity risks associated with such markets.

8Education and Awareness Efforts

MLBPA plans to educate players about the risks of personalized ads through regular training sessions. The focus is on addiction, mental health, and prohibited conduct. These efforts aim to ensure players avoid participating in such marketing campaigns.
