The 41-year-old forward stated that the time had come to hand back the number seven shirt. He expressed deep gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and the Portuguese people for their support. ## Unmatched Statistical Legacy Throughout his 23-year international career, Ronaldo represented Portugal in 234 matches, establishing a record for the most international appearances. He scored 146 goals, making him the all-time leading scorer in men's international football. These figures solidify his status as one of the most prolific players in the sport's history. ## Major Trophy Achievements Ronaldo captained Portugal to their first major international trophy at Euro 2016. Furthermore, he led the national team to secure the Nations League titles in both 2019 and 2025. These accomplishments represent the pinnacle of his tenure, marking a period of unprecedented success for the Portuguese national football team. ## Final Match Context Ronaldo's final appearance for Portugal is widely considered to be the 1-0 victory over Wales on September 24. Following this match, coach Jorge Jesus benched him, leading to a disagreement where Ronaldo left the training camp. Consequently, the Portuguese Football Association suspended and fined the veteran forward for his actions. ## Association Tribute Plans The Portuguese Football Association issued a statement expressing profound gratitude and respect for the player. They described him as an inspiration to generations of young people and the greatest player of all time. The organization intends to host a special tribute event for fans to celebrate his immense career contributions. ## Comparison With Lionel Messi While his long-time rival Lionel Messi recently concluded his Argentina career with a highly anticipated farewell match, Ronaldo's exit followed a period of internal friction. Unlike Messi's structured departure, Ronaldo's final days with the national squad were marked by his suspension and subsequent decision to step away from international duty. ## Future Club Career Despite retiring from international football, Ronaldo intends to continue his professional club career. He remains under contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. This transition mirrors the path taken by other aging football icons who shift their focus entirely toward club commitments after ending their long-standing duties with their respective national teams. ## End of an Era Ronaldo's departure marks the end of a 23-year chapter in world football. His legacy is defined by his record-breaking goal tally and his role in elevating Portugal's profile on the global stage. Fans and officials alike are now preparing to honor a player who transformed the national team's competitive standing. ## Sources covering this story - [Sky News – World — Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement From International Football](https://news.sky.com/story/cristiano-ronaldo-retires-from-international-football-13608313) - [DW – Top Stories — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From International Football After 23-Year Career](https://www.dw.com/en/cristiano-ronaldo-announces-retirement-from-international-football/a-79864361?maca=en-rss-en-top-1022-rdf) - [ESPN FC — Cristiano Ronaldo's Historic International Career Concludes](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/50387887/cristiano-ronaldo-portugal-career-best-moments-key-stats-retirement-international-soccer) - [El Universal – Nación — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from International Football After 23-Year Career](https://www.eluniversal.com.mx/deportes/cinco-momentos-memorables-de-cristiano-ronaldo-con-portugal-se-despide-cr7/) - [GE Globo – Futebol — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from Portugal National Team After 23-Year Career](https://ge.globo.com/futebol/futebol-internacional/noticia/2026/11/05/ex-companheiros-de-cristiano-ronaldo-na-selecao-de-portugal-prestam-homenagem-lenda.ghtml) - [RTP Notícias — Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from Portuguese National Team](https://www.rtp.pt/noticias/desporto/chegou-o-momento-de-devolver-a-camisola-7-da-selecao-as-reacoes-a-saida-de-ronaldo_e1777050) - [Kicker — Jorge Jesus Offers Reconciliatory Words Toward Cristiano Ronaldo](https://www.kicker.de/eine-groesse-portugals-versoehnliche-worte-von-jesus-ueber-ronaldo-1268959/artikel#omrss) - [CNA – Latest — Global Reactions to Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal Retirement](https://www.channelnewsasia.com/sport/reaction-cristiano-ronaldos-portugal-retirement-6528371) - [Source — Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from Portugal National Team](https://www.chosun.com/sports/world-football/2026/11/06/GQYDMMDBGRQTKN3CGBRDEY3EMI/) - [Source — Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from Portugal National Team](https://www.chosun.com/jp/sports-jp/2026/11/06/SSJQOJAPB5FFVB2SA7FUSI7QVM/) - [Source — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From Portugal National Team](https://www.bbc.com/portuguese/articles/cq5ynjjjnxk9o?at_medium=RSS&at_campaign=rss) - [The Globe and Mail – World — Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from International Football](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-cristiano-ronaldo-retirement-portugal/) - [ESPN – Soccer — Cristiano Ronaldo's Legendary International Football Career](https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/50387887/cristiano-ronaldo-portugal-career-best-moments-key-stats-retirement-international-soccer) - [ESPN – Soccer — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From International Football Following Coaching Dispute](https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/49266866/cristiano-ronaldo-portugal-jorge-jesus-retires-international) - [Público — Jorge Jesus Comments on Cristiano Ronaldo's National Team Departure](https://www.publico.pt/2026/11/05/desporto/noticia/jorge-jesus-despedida-cristiano-ronaldo-decisao-2193896) - [Sky News – Home — Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from International Football](https://news.sky.com/story/cristiano-ronaldo-retires-from-international-football-13608313) - [Sky Sports – Football — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from International Football After 23-Year Career](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/13593800/cristiano-ronaldo-retires-from-international-football-after-glittering-portugal-career-that-spanned-23-years) - [Sky Sports – Football — Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal Statement Analysis](https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/11095/12507208/football-latest-news-gossip) - [France 24 – International — Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from International Football](https://www.france24.com/en/video/20261105-portugal-cristiano-ronaldo-announces-his-international-retirement) --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
