Platon Releases PAROS: A Photographic Memoir of His Childhood Island

Renowned photographer Platon captures four decades of life on the Greek island of Paros.

1Personal Monograph Launch

Photographer Platon releases his most personal book, PAROS, published by MW Editions in October 2026. The monograph features 225 black-and-white photographs taken over four decades on the Greek island. It serves as both a family memoir and a record of a disappearing lifestyle, reflecting on themes of belonging, mortality, and human connection.

2Artistic Visual Economy

Platon’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by his father, an architect who sketched using uncompromising black and white tones. This visual economy defines the stark contrasts found throughout the book. By avoiding intermediate tones, Platon captures the essence of his subjects, mirroring the precise, ink-based sketches he observed during his childhood in Lefkés.

3Subjects Beyond Power

Known for photographing world leaders, Platon shifts his focus in this book to the villagers of Paros. He captures farmers, fishermen, and elders, whom his uncle Stelios described as good quality people. These portraits, often set against signature white or black backdrops, emphasize the quiet dignity and weathered humanity of the islanders.

4Spontaneous Daily Scenes

Interspersed with formal portraits are spontaneous images of daily life, including religious processions and agricultural labor. These photographs utilize grainy textures and tilted framing to provide a sense of immediacy. They document the communal rituals that define the island, contrasting with the precise, sculptural nature of the individual portraits featured elsewhere.

5Documenting Changing Spaces

The book highlights specific locations like the village parliament kafeneion and Kaparos Monastery. The kafeneion, once a hub for communal gathering, has been converted into a private residence. Through these images, Platon records the physical transformation of the island, noting how spaces once open to the community have shifted toward private use.

6Visual Dialogue and Composition

Platon uses a square format with full-bleed images and double-page spreads to create a narrative flow. He pairs images in suggestive dialogue, such as an elderly face echoing the grain of a wooden door. This technique reveals the deep, inseparable connection between the island's inhabitants, their objects, and the surrounding landscape.

7Awareness of Time's Passage

The work is marked by an acute awareness of mortality, as many subjects have passed away since being photographed. A poignant example is an elderly tailor, captured shortly before his death, who shared that happiness exists in fleeting moments. These images serve as a testament to the resilience of the island's people.

8Retrospective Exhibition Context

The book launch coincides with PEOPLE POWER, Platon’s first major museum retrospective in Athens. Hosted at the Benaki Museum from November 5, 2026, to January 31, 2027, the exhibition complements the book's themes. Together, these projects invite viewers to engage more deeply with the physical world and the humanity of others.
