Apart from a minor fast-forward button issue, the mechanical device worked perfectly, showcasing remarkable durability. ## Mechanical repair process The fast-forward issue stemmed from a broken cog in the mechanical system. Using an online repair video, the author fixed it with glue. This process highlighted how repairable old technology was compared to modern devices. ## Exploring recording methods The device could record via built-in microphone or 5-pin DIN port. The author acquired regular cassettes from thrift stores, aware of the expected low quality but eager for the retro experience. ## Modern compatibility challenges Using an adapter to connect the DIN port to a Mac revealed volume level issues. This made the author understand the importance of audio controls in vintage cassette decks, requiring an amplification solution. ## Creative solution with guitar amp The author ingeniously used a Boss Katana guitar amplifier as an audio interface to boost the signal from the Mac. This complex adapter setup enabled acceptable recording levels. ## Retro tech's place in modern world The project demonstrated cassettes' technological impressiveness despite not being ideal for music. Their easy recording and editing features offer unique advantages missing in modern devices. The author developed a phone-independent music listening method through this experiment. ## Sources covering this story - https://swiftrocks.com/i-tried-to-record-music-onto-a-cassette-tape-using-modern-tech — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
