Astropad Workbench 1.3 introduces speed and privacy enhancements
New features and performance boost for remote Mac access
1Astropad Workbench 1.3 launched
Astropad has released version 1.3 of its remote desktop app Workbench, marking its largest update yet. This version includes new tools for accessing unattended Macs and performance improvements. Workbench debuted in April, enabling remote access to Macs from iPhones or iPads.
2Video streaming rebuilt for Apple silicon
Version 1.3 rebuilds the video streaming system for Apple silicon. Astropad claims streaming is now 30% faster. Content-aware encoding adjusts how text and images are processed, enhancing text clarity and refresh rates.
3Privacy curtain feature added
A new privacy curtain feature hides the Mac display during remote sessions. Users can choose from three styles, dim the physical display, and block local keyboard or mouse input. This is particularly beneficial for those working in public spaces.
4Automatic relaunch with Watchdog
The new Watchdog feature monitors Workbench in the background and relaunches it after a crash, disconnection, or failure to respond. This ensures users experience uninterrupted connectivity.
5Picture-in-picture support
Picture-in-picture support allows users to keep the remote Mac visible while working in another app. On iPad, shortcut mapping can redirect commands typically handled by iPadOS to the connected Mac.
671 bug fixes
Astropad states that this release includes 71 bug fixes covering keyboard input, clipboard syncing, sign-ins, and other parts of the app. These significantly improve the overall user experience.
7Previous update improvements
Previous updates to Workbench added enhanced external mouse support, smoother zooming, smarter sleep handling, visible macOS cursors, and the ability to send Command-Space from an iPad.
8Astropad's future plans
Astropad plans to introduce more language support, longer background connections, faster connection times, and improved encryption in future versions of Workbench. This ensures it remains a vital tool for remote work and Mac management.
