Android Notification Pitfalls: Custom Sound and Channel Issues
Common Android notification traps encountered in a prayer app and how to solve them.
1Notification Channels Are Immutable
Once a notification channel is created on Android, its sound or importance level cannot be changed. Calling createNotificationChannel again with new settings is silently ignored. The solution is to use a new channel ID (e.g., adhan_v2, adhan_v3) for each configuration change and delete old channels.
2Custom Sound Belongs to the Channel
The custom sound is a property of the notification channel, not the notification itself. On modern Android versions, setting a sound on the notification has no effect. The sound must be defined in the NotificationChannel, and the notification must be routed to the correct channel to avoid falling back to the default sound.
3Samsung's MP3 Compatibility Issue
Some OEM devices, particularly Samsung, may not play MP3 files as notification sounds. For example, an adhan.mp3 that works on a Pixel might be silent on a Samsung Note 8. Re-encoding the sound to WAV (PCM) format usually resolves this issue across devices.
4Use Exact Alarms for Time-Critical Notifications
For time-critical notifications like prayer times, inexact alarms can cause delays. On Android 12 and later, using USE_EXACT_ALARM ensures notifications fire at the exact scheduled time. Without it, notifications may arrive minutes late, degrading user experience.
5Auto-Update Problems
Many users disable auto-updates in the Play Store, missing critical fixes. Implementing an in-app update flow (e.g., Play Core) ensures users receive the latest version, improving app reliability and user satisfaction.
6Understanding Platform Behaviors
